I don't know about the Yogic diet, but I used to do a fast/raw

weekend every month or so (fast on a Friday, then eat only raw

food/fruit for the weekend).

The first day is always the worst - I used to feel a bit nauseous (it

came in short spells for me). After that, you feel revitalised and

full of energy. So its definitely worth it - so keep it up!

I found that distraction helped - give yourself something to do that

requires some level of concentration, or just sleep! And maybe give

yourself a non-food reward for seeing through the next couple of

hours etc. (Get a friend to massage you or whatever else you like!).

When you break the fast and eat cooked/processed foods again they

make you feel really bloated (even a small amount) and seem to almost

drain your new found energy away :(

Make sure you get plenty of liquid during the fast.

I've put on loads of weight since I took my current

stressful/frustrating job, but you've inspired me to try a fast/raw

this weekend.

Yeah, do it on a weekend. It's much harder when you have to work! My

hunger is dictated by my brain that expects food at 7:00, 11:30 and 5:00.

Hunger went away or became less when it wasn't those expected food time.

You brain literally push food out of your stomach into you intestines to

give that hungry feeling. If you get hungry drink water or hot water (don't

knock it till you tried it), or if you will power is faltering, try green

tea or herbal tea (not normal). Did you read up about it in a yoga book?

Keep busy, read a book. The hardest part is to stop thinking about food. I

try to think about it as a relief that I don't have to eat now.

A fast is without food of any type, resist any liquid food, you'll be better

for it. The bloated feeling is incredible if you go straight back to eating

normally. Try to eat:

Fast Day

Fast Day

1st only fruit

2nd add raw veggies

3rd add cooked veggies

4th add simple whole grains

5th eat normally.

It should reduce the bloated feeling. I could only eat 2 or 3 mouthfuls of

normal food.

If you can't manage on a week day for whatever reason, try it on a Friday

and Saturday.

Starting with a whole week may not be a good idea.

Try fasting one day only at first. Also a yogic diet

is better suited for a yogi. There are other factors

involved. Don't stress your body overtly, to do things

it is not used to.

As a suggestion try and think of some benefit the diet

would give you, something you really beleive in. It

would help a lot to maintain the diet.

I've tried such stuff before, and a major benefit is

in terms of self-control. Another is purging the body

of toxins (rowans suggestions might help here), and

giving the digestive system a rest cycle. You would be

surprised by yourself if you go thru.

BUT PLEASE do not get addicted to that feeling, or the

benefit you 'set' for yourself. It can become a

damaging habit or bounce back as an eating binge.

An interesting thing would be to observe your thoughts

as you do this. Try it and see.

all the best,

Ranjit.

Great advice.

I found I came out in spots after/during a fast - part of the toxin

expulsion? Sometimes I also felt weak on the first day, so I would

not advise fasting while at work/uni. Try just a weekend, with Friday

just fruit and raw food, Saturday fast and Sunday fruit/raw food.

After you feel invigorated. There are some books with good advice on

this.

Oh my god!! LOL! I _am_ only doing it for a day!! I caouldn't even

last for two days, let alone a flippin' week!! ;)

Please explain more!!

This is defianately showing me what being 'hungry' really means!!

I don't think it was such a good idea having four cups of tea

yesterday as coz i had a bit of a headache earlier! Doh! :(

I'm looking forward to the benefits (and eating food again!!)

No idea why you came out in spots. Maybe something you

'ate/drank' on the fast day/before/after it that

didn't suit you.

Sue,

Well, that's perfectly fine!!

Rob's suggestion is good, I think, helps easing into

and out of a fast.

I like that!!

Well you had me worried, my fault, misinterpreted the

mail from Rowan as a 5 day schedule you would try to

follow.

DONT do a flippin week :)

It simply has to do with body metabolism. Also people

who practice yoga, also practice cleansing techniques

etc. Anyway in short their bodies are better 'used to'

do such a thing.

I bet it does!! For me it stopped my complains that I

never 'really' felt hungry before I eat.

Maybe water would be better if you are used to

drinking it. For me also skipping meal timings would

cause a headache, that would go only after I rested

(eating didn't help).

During detoxification, toxins in the body/blood are released through the

skin (spots etc), bowels, urine, nose (maybe a cold or a nose bleed), sweat

and mucus from the lungs out of the mouth. You can also have head aches and

vomit.

sorry if this doesn't sound too good.
