Yuk!) is cultural subversion. Its all about " reclaiming your cultural space " . Its about turning around the slick & glossy lifestyle ads to reveal a bit more of the truth behind them than the advertisers would like. Its about trying to make people think a bit more about what they consume and how they live. Its a reaction to what used to be music concerts now being sponsored events, to sponsorship in schools by unethical companies. Its about media control. For me it ties in with my environmental and ethical concerns, and with the control over our lives that large multinational companies enjoy. Probably the best known proponents are Ad Busters (www.adbusters.org). They've created things like TV Turn Off day, anti-adverts for things like McDonalds (an overweight baby dressed up in McD freebies), Tommy Hilfiger (a group of sheep dressed up in his gear - sorry all you fashion victims but you're being conned!), cigerette companies etc. They use the same slick advertising techniques as the real thing (they are in fact a design house). But there are lots of " underground " culture jammers. Remember the TV licence ads around the UK recently, where they listed addresses that didn't have a TV licence? These were anonyously jammed with the message " perhaps they have a life " . Of course, its what you make it, so other people could have a different take on it. BTW a great book on this type of stuff is the best seller " No Logo " by Naomi Klein. Be warned - it might just make you want to take to the streets! --rob
Guest guest
____________ Jim Higson ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ I'm upto the No Logo chapter in NoLogo. Fantastic book. Incidently, McLibel is in crisis at the moment. Go to www.mcspotlight.org and send your protest mails from there. The only jamming I have ever done is spraying " It's just fizzy brown water! " in a life taste's good coke poster. I justify this to my consumer friends by saying I think my message had as much right to be there as theirs, more since it came straight from a person who loves there ane not from someone trying to make a profit out of those people. _Jim_ vegan-network, " spacevegan " <rob@z...> wrote: > vegan-network, " Sue Grayson " <suzy.grayson@n...> wrote: > <snip> > > > > What's culture jamming?? > > > <snip> > > > > Sas > > Well, culture jamming (its an American/Canadian term. Guest guest
____________ Jim Higson ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Try reclaithestreets.org If they don't then someone there will help you. There's a company called PISTAEK also, but I don't know how you would contact them If it's anti McD's then mcspotlight.org should help. Don't forget to send a protest email about Helen & Dave's eviction! Also, www.p21.co.uk is good for vegie shirts (don't eat us etc..) vegan-network, " Sue Grayson " <suzy.grayson@n...> wrote: > > > The only jamming I have ever done is spraying " It's just fizzy brown > > water!
