>We could use Jerry Friedman's " veganism is the functional equivalent

>of a religion " argument, but we might then have to notify people that

>we are vegans beforehand, which in this case could be a big green V

>on our doors (hmmm - maybe not - what does that remind you of!).

Or we could put V's on everyone's door like the did in Denmark with the star

of David (everyone wore it so no one could discriminate)

There is an element of truth to your big brother fears. Networked speed

cameras (if you're not aware, they're already here) that can pin point an

exact car and route it took could be an asset to road planning. It can also

be a far more lethal asset for hit men/women.

I want people in Sainsburys to see what I buy. If " the government " use

private data to their own advantage, I'll be the first to jump on their

collective heads and set a precedent.

But having said that I'd like to know my rights now you mentioned the IRS

and that case.

Happy police state.

Tesco do have a number of categories for their card holders, not vegan

though. So no meat coupons but plenty of dairy ones.

As for it being used in detecting tax fraud I'm not sure what the

agreement says but I'm fairly sure it will be something along the lines of

" we may pass on the data but will not disclose your personal details " . I

think the data protection act doesn't allow them to say who you are so I

don't see how it could be used unless the IR had a hunch and got a court order.

Don't kid yourself that supermarket databases are private property. They are

typically stored on the statisticians unprotected work PCs.
