Hmmm, I like to think that I'm making a statement about veganism to Sainsbury's by only putting vegan stuff on mine - I wouldn't let my Dad use it when he bought a veggie (not vegan) sandwich once... By the way, has anyone heard anything about labelling in Sainsbury's??? I phoned their helpline months ago to check if something was vegan and asked them for the most recent list of suitable-for-vegans-stuff, and they said that there was no point in them sending it to me because they were about to start labelling such foods as vegan-friendly. No evidence of it yet, in the little Cambridge in-town store at least. Has anyone else heard/seen any evidence of this??? However, i always have coupons for meat and dairy products! Doh!! >wouldn't let my Dad use it when he bought a veggie (not vegan) >sandwich once... That's a bit extreme IMO. I wouldn't think Sainsburys take any notice myself!! >I phoned their helpline months ago to check if something was vegan >and asked them for the most recent list of suitable-for-vegans-stuff, >and they said that there was no point in them sending it to me >because they were about to start labelling such foods as >vegan-friendly. i have seen some of their sorbets labelled as vegan but haven't noticed this on anything else. Would be fab if this was the case, though!! Thanks for telling us, Hilary!! Sas.
Guest guest
I agree that there should be better labeling on foods. I hate the way that to make an ethical decision on these things that we have to either rule out 99% of stuff because it doesn't SAY it's vegan or mull over the ingregdiants and say 'looks ok' but never really be completely sure. IMHO we need a sytem of symbols where we rely not just on their presence to indicate vegan suitability, but also on their absense to indicate unsuitability. BTW, I went into the body shop the other day and asked what was vegan. The girl looked at me like I was mad, but phoned head office anyway. NOTHING that they do is!! Can you believe that? Tescos label some of their stuff (like cakes and biscuits) as " not suitable for vegetarians " - I found this useful when I was vegetarian, saved scanning the ingredients list. I think its Tescos who also have labels indicating if it contains milk, egg, gluten, nuts etc, so they are heading in the right direction. Helen.
