Guest guest
<but its better to organise yourself so you <don't need this type of convenience and all the <(hidden) problems it <causes. In an ideal world... I don't consider myself to be one of those " wimpy " vegans, but when it comes down to it, there *is* quite a big price difference, Sainsbury's being cheaper, and for the unwaged, this can make all the difference. Also, we can look on the bright side and hope that meat-eaters and vegetarians will buy some of the yummy vegan stuff that the supermarkets start selling and realise what a great way of eating and living we actually have, n'est-ce pas? Guest guest
>There are a lot of " wimpy " (bad word, but who cares!) vegetarians >(and possibly vegans) who see it just as a diet thing. That is an >important part, but I think of my veganism as a political statement >and part of that is ethical/enviromental justice. If there is one thing I dislike it is the idea that veganism is simply about diet. But if there is another thing I dislike it is people tieing in other beliefs. Being against the use of animals and cruelty is an ethical belief while being against supermarkets, capitalism etc. are political and the two can exist independently although admittedly they do often occur together. This is not to dismiss veganism as being political, this is necessary as political institutions govern ethics in our society. Nor is this a dismissal of someone giving their own meaning to their being a vegan, only that it is unfair to have the same expectations of others. I spend two and a half hours on a train to be able to go to a proper health food store, and this includes buying things that I can get in Tesco. But when I can buy organic baked beans or Soya Milk for half the price at a supermarket then this does make a big financial difference. Aside from this there are certain, more exotic items, which I can buy in a supermarket that I cannot get elsewhere. >Whereas your (local? if you're >lucky!) independent health food/organic store stocks them because >they believe they are the correct things to sell. I have never seen a solely vegan health food store, all of them stock products containing dairy and eggs, and I've seen many that include meats (albeit organic ones). Anyway you've given me an idea for my (not vegan/ethics/politics) dissertation so thank you. Michael P.S. And if there is another thing I dislike it is email software which crashes when you have nearly finished writing and when auto save hasn't kicked in. You should have the seen the first version, it would have won an Nobel prize.
