Guest guest
The scene: Canary Wharf Car Show. An open air show put on for the benefit of the overpaid ignorenti, featuring Porches, Ferraris, superbikes etc. The Players: Spacevegan (a socio-ethical enviro-vegan temporary worker) Attractive Promo-Girl (temporary worker promoting credit cards) Act 1, scene 1 [spacevegan has no choice but to walk through the car show on way from workplace to get lunch] APG: " Excuse me sir, do you use a credit card? " SV: " Yes " APG: " Do you get any kind of award, such as air miles, etc " SV: " Yes " APG: " What benefits do you get? " SV: " The bank makes a donation to Greenpeace " . APG: " Oh, its an affinity card. Can I tell you about this card from GM? " SV: " Err. No, I'm against cars " . (GM = General Motors) APG: " Huh? " SV: " Well, they only seem to create pollution and destroy communities " APG: " Oh. For a moment there I thought you said you were against cars " SV: " Yes, that's right. I think they're unethical " APG: " So, what are you doing here then " [waves in direction of the pollution machines] SV: " Well, I work around the corner and come this way to get lunch " APG: speechless, mouth agape. SV: exit to soup shop. THE END (based on a true story!) Some context: I am against cars (I choose not to own one by choice). I do believe they destroy communities, but I understand that now society has gone done the route of becoming dependent on them, some people cannot do without them. I would like people to consider alternatives to using their car, and avoid unnecessary jouneys. Ultimately I would like communities to be more " localised " so there is no need for most car journeys. I'd also like to see more alternatice fuels in use (like the veggie van!), but also a stop to new roads being built. -- Rob
