Guest guest
Hi Roy and welcome, I take it you've seen Robert Cohens' web site? http://www.notmilk.com It's got lots of interesting stuff. I used to be tempted when people had cheese pizza's, but now I wince. It's probably something to do with the 50+ hormones naturally found in dairy, plus the stuff they add. Then there's the buffering of gastric (from 1.8 to almost neutral) juices it causes, making other food v.difficult to digest. Just interesting in why you don't eat eggs, but dairy is okay? Please tell me it's not the calcium myth? To everyone else, yesterday while in the coffee room, someone had left their milk out, and for the first time I smelled cow smell. It's the same smell when you put your nose to a cow's skin and sniff, mixed with an uddery type smell that can only be found at the dairy. RM roybad [roybad] 13 June 2001 22:02 vegan-network [100% veg*n ] Hey there!! Hi everone! I joined this group a few ays ago, and spurned on by Nicole's 'first hello' I thought Id say Hi. The only problem is that I sent it and waited and waited and waited, and it didnt update, so hey, I thought I would give it another go. Well, my name is Roy. Im 28 and currently in London. Im not strictly a vegan. My family going back generations have been non-egg eating vegetarians, and that's what I am. The whole dairy industry here has made me think pretty hard about dairy products and so there is a lot more Orange Juice in my fridge than milk. Im in the computer industry, currently working for a French bank which is seriously annoying to say the least. Paris might be considered the city of love, but I have a few choice words to describe it and the French attitude to veggies/vegans. Okay, enough said Apart from one thing.. how come the chat area is always empty? Guest guest
The chat are is probably empty because people just seem to use this as a form of chat. I am also new and 28 but live in Wales and am a teacher. I eat eggs occasionally but no dairy. Guest guest
Hey Rowan! Actually I havn't seen been to that web site. I did a fair amount of research a few years ago, and was dismayed to find that as a male, drinking milk to age 11 meant I had a very unhealthy amount of female hormones.. as do all milk drinking boys... a scary thought! Add to this that the adult body doesnt digest and deal with cows milk very well at all, and one begins to wonder why we have milk products.. but as I said, its something that I've been working on. As for the eggs thing, we've just never eaen eggs ever. It comes from the 'possibility' of an egg maybe being fertilised and so may have life. its an old hindu thing I think actually 'Proper' hindus (Btw Im agnostic) dont eat eggs.. but milk products are okay because cows are supposed to be treated very well in India.. and the bullock milk that they get there is a whole lot more healthy that the far cow milk we get in the UK. As I said, the whole idea of keeping cows 'in calf' for milk, meat, etc.. makes me want to throw up. I hate to say I was a big fan of pizzas,, but these days I definately prefer pasta. I have to sa, trying to be vegetarian let alone a vegan in the UK, living on fast food must be a nightmare. I consider myself lucky because 100% of indian food (well the stuff my mum makes) is vegetarian and 95% of it is vegan. Any ideas on a GOOD replacement for yogurt? Guest guest
Yes, Yofu is really good. I tried soyage the other day, which IMO is not anywhere near as good. I can get it from H & B and Sainsburys. RM roybad [roybad] 14 June 2001 22:32 vegan-network Re: [100% veg*n ] Hey there!! Any ideas on a GOOD replacement for yogurt? I didn't believe it until my husband introduced me to the idea, but it really works. Guest guest
Well, my bro (also a veggie) just went around Tesco and was disgusted that there was hardly anything vegan there! I'm in London, and I'll be on the lookout for Provamel.. thanks Roy vegan-network, " Angie Wright " <angiewright@n...> wrote: > You can get vegan yogurt in UK.----Provamel ---where do you live???? Guest guest
wow, this message gets long quick! > > I suppose a lot of Hindus and Jains in the UK are not aware of the > way cows are treated here, or they would be vegan. > But how can bullocks produce milk?? I thought bullocks were the > castrated male cattle. > to be honest I have no clue as to what the cattle animal is over in India, Ive been there once for one week. The cattle were treated very well (thankfully) to the extent that they banned plastic bags as they were ending up in the cattle's food. The cattle is like a cow, but much more muscular with horns and a hump. A very scientific observation I know. I thought they were bullocks. Maybe Im wrong. The milk was nothing like cows milk though. I have no doubt its better for you than the stuff over here Being a vegan for a Hindu, and probably a Jain (although I have no experience) is pretty easy. Cut out milk, and there you are. Most of us dont do butter for health reasons so its not that big a jump. > > > Pizzas without cheese and just the vegetable toppings are just fine > anyway (be careful though some pizza chains may use animal > ingredients in the sauce or whey in the bases), or you can use one of > the soya cheeses, or even hummus as a savoury topping works well in > place of cheese.
