Guest guest
In the old days we could get enough B12 from the dirt on vegetables, it was in the soil and in the vegetables, and in the water. Now thanks to modern farming methods and hygiene regulation, there's not much B12 left from those sources, so it takes modern food synthesis to get B12 and DHA's. Point one. Ask said meatie if they take supplements, if they say no, discontinue conversation. Cereal is fortified with all sorts of vitamins and minerals as is cows milk with vitamin D (perhaps not here, but in the states it is). Most prepared food or even non-prepared food has some fortification in it. Point two. The really annoying point is the insinuation that we live of pills. B12 is normally grown from bacteria and used to fortify lots of foods, or put into concentrated for like a pill. DHA's and all other essential fatty acids that can't be found in plants are grown from Algae and are found in sea weed (I think). Point three. All older men have lower B12 levels, so B12 is not just an issue for vegans, it's affects all people even when they consume flesh, which probably has less B12 if they're grain fed etc. Everything I've read says B12 deficiency is not a vegetarian issue, but a population deficiency in general. They have to have injections as they can't absorb it from dietary sources. I have met a few mainly raw food vegans who have been diagnosed with a B12 deficiency, and they are the vegans who don't tend to be eating the fortified cereals or Marmite. It seems to me that it is the strict fruitarians and raw fooders who have to take special care over B12, rather than the vegans in general who have to worry. I get Vitamin B12 from Kellog's Cornflakes and Plamil milk! - There isn't much in vegetables, so you normally need to get something which has it added! Guest guest
Hi there vegan fellows, I have just taken a blood test that showed that I've got very low B12 in my blood! Had a test done several years ago which said it was low then and started to take pills (against my will!). Next time I took a test the B12 was very high so I stopped gladely with the pills again! Now I'm in the same position again and would prefer not taking tablets! As I know it's dangerous to lack in B12 so I have to do something about it, does anyone know what's the best natural way to fill my B12 level up? Would appreciate any suggestions and answers! Thanks! Guest guest
I suggest you contact the vegan goddess of blood, Zoue. I remember her saying that most methods of measuring B12 are crude. Perhaps she can shed light on how serious the situation is? Guest guest
Hi Sandra > does anyone know what's > the best natural way to fill my B12 level up? I know it's not exactly " natural " , but many cereals are fortified with B12 - I get through a large amount of Kellogs Cornflakes! Also, some of the Soya milks such as Plamil. Also, some of the Soya >milks such as Plamil. I find it just hard to believe that our body can take up the fortified B12!!! I mean, it's not natural, will our body recognise it as a nutrition then? Are you sure you are taking it up? LOVE Sandra _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
If you want to know the answer, the best person to ask is Zoue, the B12 vegan goddess. I remember her saying a lot of the additives in cereals etc are more marketing gimmicks than real nutrients. It gets quite complicated but, from memory there are two main types of B12, one's cobolminum or something. Anyway, one's supposed to be better than the other. To find that out you need to contact the company and give them the batch number and then they can tell you exactly what type of B12 was used. The B12 they use vary from batch to batch.
