Guest guest
What chemicals are these other than alum and linseed oil? People have been curing leather and using animal hides for centuries if not millenia. The processes of preserving leather are probably no more environmentally destructive than growing, importing and processing cotton, or certainly in manufacturing the plastics based clothing that many vegans favour. In terms of environmental sustainability, it would probably be easier for a small self reliant community to produce leather items on a small scale than it would to be import and manufacture cotton clothing or the various substitutes that we use that are dependent on the petro-chemical industry. a future vegan-permaculture society would do well to look at alternative fibre plants such as nettle or hemp, or some of the plants covered in the Plants For A Future article at http://www.comp.leeds.ac.uk/pfaf/fibplant.html Cheers, Graham www.landandliberty.co.uk > > EXACTLY!! ) > > xk@xx > > > ash > [ash] > 11 October 2001 22:08 > vegan-network > [100% veg*n ] Leather Vs Environment > > Anyway , leather is just dead skin so think how many > chemicals need to be added to it to stop it from rotting ! > Ashley x
