Guest guest
I can understand your sentiment (and this is a response to other comments on this topic) but didn't this whole debate start with the question, " What do I do with my non-vegan stuff when I become vegan? " . In which case I don't see that there are any benefits in throwing away an old leather jacket to buy a new vegan (fake) leather one. (Oh, ok, I can think of one...to keep the vegan police away from your door) How does increasing demand for a consumer product help the environment or animals? Isn't the petrochemical industry responsible for the deaths and poisoning of countless animals, not to mention damage to ecosystems and the sparking off of the odd war? In a similar vein, I remember once seeing a TV programme (TV Dinners with Hugh Unfathomably-Longname) with some guy who was living in a forest setting, inviting friends around for a dinner of smoked " roadkill " rabbit stew. One of them was a vegetarian and she managed to eat it (amongst a lot of veg). In this situation, despite my initial reaction, I couldn't think of an argument against eating the animal (apart from feelings of nausea and squeamishness - which admittedly I would probably suffer from). Anyway, my point being that to approach " veganism " dogmatically can mean making some unenvironmental decisions which at the same time don't benefit any animals. vegan-network, " k@ " <kittyveg@l...> wrote: > EXACTLY!! ) > > xk@xx > > > ash@g... > 11 October 2001 22:08 > [100% veg*n ] Leather Vs Environment > > Anyway , leather is just dead skin so think how many > chemicals need to be added to it to stop it from rotting ! > Ashley x
