Guest guest
Hi all, Following some of the recent discussions of possible vegan 'grey areas' at this list (which BTW I'm very pleased to say have been discused in a pretty open, constructive and non-dogmatic way not always to be experienced on the great World Wide Web!!), I've forwrded this extract from a private post from a fellow permaculturist which explores a couple more of those 'tricky areas'- I'd be interested in others' views.... (my comments are the non-quoted bits BTW) >Found myself wondering what the Vegan position on Wormbins is. Is it exploiting the animals for their by product? Theres no 'hard & fast' vegan line, as much diversity as within permaculture really- some 'hardliners' might say 'no', but I see the relationship as non-exploitative- worms are given a healthy diet/environment, none get harmed when harvesting the product (maybe the odd one gets squashed), it's a sustainable way of recycling an element of household waste- whats the problem? > imagine vegan organic eschews horseshit too. Slightly more complex q. from the strict vegan POV- many would argue that the horse shit is an output from an essentially exploitative relationship- not sure i agree- horsedrawn has to be more sustainable than cars/petrochemical- I see no reason why mutually respectful relations between horses & people can't be sorted myself- one arguement I've heard is that the process of 'breaking in'/taming a hosre to do the will of 'people' is essentially abusive, punishments involving pain unless the horse behaves in the desired way to 'teach' it...
