Guest guest
hi, re: the indian food comment: my mum says most indian food is cooked in vegetable oil, sometimes ghee is added to dhals etc at the END (so you might be able to ask for it to be omitted), for the flavour (never liked it myself even in my vegetarian, pre-vegan days, but that is an aside). indian food is usually v good for vegetarians but sometimes more troublesome for vegans though i think usually it's fine, and when it comes to ghee can easily be substituted for. ask for the breads - chappattis, puris without ghee -and otherwise most other vegetarian non dairy based (ie paneer etc) indian dishes are also vegan. excuse my above sentence construction. this is slightly rushed! however some time back during my finals i called an indian restaurant for take away dhal and some vegetable dish and for some reason decided to ask if it was vegetarian, just as confirmation - i wasn't expecting it to not be so, and i was told that it was 'mostly vegetarian'(!). what does that mean i exclaimed?!? - apparently they used animal fat in some of the vegetable dishes - they weren't listed as 'vegetarian' in the menu, just 'vegetable'. this has succeeded in making me quite paranoid now when eating out, so i always check things. dessert-wise the indian choice is sadly quite limited, being dairy based or containing ghee.(some are okay- cashew nut and pistacchio barfis are often vegan, mostly they are, sometimes milk powder/ghee is added but apparently rarely) my mum always tries to make me vegan versions of things though, which is great. okay one last comment- can anyone suggest a good book i could buy on 'animal rights' that i could lend to non vegan/vegetarian friends?? but something, hmm, subtle?? not subtle exactly - but not-angry maybe is what i'm thinking....something well argued and reasoned, which i could get my friends to read? ie friends not otherwise inclined to read such material in the first place? or even slightly/subconsciously hostile to it? any ideas??! i've never read much literature on the area because i have never needed to be convinced of the logic of veganism - my move to vegan from vegetarian was odd as well - i was sitting in a restaurant with my family after my 'a' levels 4 years ago and my dad said what ice cream do you want for dessert? and i said none, i'm a vegan. and so i'm a vegan. that was it. i decided between finishing my meal and contemplating dessert. it was a little bizarre, but i guess that's how it is with me(!)...i think i had been thinking about it for a while (but i don't even remember this being so - it's strange i don't remember much about it except the night in the restaurant!). also it's the only thing i'm CERTAIN of. having studied philosophy, and perhaps also just being of the temperament to be so, i am uncertain about everything. or at least cannot claim to be certain of anything. the only thing i think i know is the vegan ethic. cos whether there is a god or not, or whatever the nature and point of our existence - veganism remains an absolute i think. but then this is also a problem, because no one else in this world i care deeply about is a vegan - my family are all vegetarian, so, but. anyway enough of my vegan related (but not derived!) angst!! bani _______________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
