Slugs love it, so they >rip that to shreds instead of the good stuff. that bit is true! >Someone told me at the weekend they had been advised that there is no >nutritional value in eating sesame seeds unless they are crushed before >hand. Is this true? Does anything like this apply to any other seeds or >nuts? I have sesame seeds, liniseeds and pumpkin seeds in my breakfast >every morning. i'd say there was a strong argument to suggest it was true. dogs aint so dumb when they take a look behind them, have a look at your's and check out what you are not chewing properly. most things smaller than sweetcorn shoot straight though. i suppose if you were really anal you could get in there with a fork to perform an autopsy. oh my Gawd and now I am going to take about food if anyone has an apetitititite left. for seeds in general, try dry roasting them in a hot skillet without any oil over a fst flame just before serving and scoot in a bit of shoyu, proper soya sauce. pumkin, sunflower etc takes great this was, the heat of the seeds should evaporate the soya sauce. skip any supermarket brands of fake soya sauce with sugar or caramel in them. for sesame, try making gomasio. heat up your skillet again and drop a teaspoon of sea salt on it shake it gently until it spread ands get really hot. then drop in between 7 to 15 teaspoons of sesame according to taste and let them golden, moving them constantly because they will burn very easily. you will hear them starting to crackle and pop and at that point stop. take the back of a spoon and crush the mix up or use a mortar and pestle until half the seeds are broken. them mix well. sprinkle on any savoury foods. if you are going for a " muesli de luxe " , i'd give it a miss unless you cook it. the mix of carbs [ cereals ] and proteins [ waxy tropical nuts ] is a hard mix to digest and the mix of fruits and cereal is prone to cause fermentation. in addition the oats etc will absorb up to 5 times their amount of water so if you dont add that, where is you body going to take it from? i'd say it would lead to a sense of congestedness. although it is sold as a " health food " it is not really. i guess if you want sesame for the calcium you could always dribble some tahini on something or use it to make sauces. or if you put some tahini in a bowl and dribble in some water then whisk with a fork it'll make a light creamy dip which can then be flavoured sweet or savoury. exchange water for sauce milk for a creamier effect. when you start this it looks awful as if it is not going to work but stick at it and it will go smoothy and frothy even. > I used to also have sunflowers seeds but I read somewhere >sunflower seeds are best avoided since they inhibit the absorbtion of some >essential fatty acid or something (is this true?) dont know this. john
