Guest guest
The question is, are pearls removed from shells that still have the oyster's in them? If so, I can't imagine anyone taking care not to hurt the oyster. Actually, it's on a list of animal products at http://www.vegansociety.com/html/info/info30.html. Sorry, it doesn't sound like you're having a fun Christmas, at least as far as presents are concerned . Guest guest
technically speaking, pearls are not vegan...neither the natural nor cultured variety... you have to kill the oyster basically to get the pearl out... not to mention the fact that overfishing of oysters(along with general overfishing) have made wastelands of different sections of the oceans fraggle " Honor Chan " <honor_chan wrote: >Considering that they come from mollusks, I would think that they aren't. >However, I have been going through a lot of sites trying to find some more >information on pearls, but I haven't found much so far. Guest guest
*shrug* It was just possible that some quirk of nature protected the oysters until after they die and the shell floats from A to B, or becomes openable, or something. So it wasn't a silly question. Guest guest
Hey, didn't you know fish are vegetables!!! But on the pearl topic, as pearls come from animals they cannot be considered vegan. But seriously, I think the issue is complicated for non-veg people by a couple of factors: 1) A lot of people call themselves vegetarian or vegan, yet still consume fish. This makes the situation tougher for we genuine veg-heads, who have to continually have to explain that fish, chicken stock etc, even in the smallest amounts, is NOT acceptable 2) According to the kosher laws, fish are categorised along with vegetables, rather than being categorised as meat. So, for example, it is okay for a jewish person who keeps kosher to eat fish with a milky sauce, but not chicken. It's incredibly aggravating, but I think the best we can do is simply smile and say " no, fishes are animals, don't you think? And I don't eat animals. Guest guest
You could always try a bit of sarcasm: " oh, well, fish isn't an animal " *groan* " of course you're right, dad - fishes are vegetables, and they grow in the ground along with the turnips! " My parents went through the whole 'well, you'll still eat fish, won't you? " thing - it's amazing how dumb people can be sometimes. My mother still can't understand why I won't eat anything with butter or chicken stock in it - after all, a little bit of stock won't hurt me, will it? NO - BUT IT SURE AS HELL HURT THE CHICKEN!!! :-) Dedicated vegans have to be the calmest, most relaxed people in the world to cope with it all, I'm sure of it!
