Guest guest
ok, my wife K@, usually posts on here, but i am going to now. k@ works at a coop that distributes veg*n foods to shops etc. you do not have to be vegetarian to work there, a couple aren't. she has noticed however, an attitude by the vegetarians towards the vegans. the vegans ARE portayed as being " extreme " , " nutters " by the vegetarians. this would really annoy me, to the extent i think i'd be un-popular. the only reason i can see as guilt. they are trying to makwe the vegans out to be nutters, to excuse themselves from being vegan. when i was vegetarian, i knew no others, let alone vegans. i decided after (eventually)meeting a couple of vegans to go vegan. i didn't know all the reasons to be vegan, i just knew if people were doing it, then it was for the benefit of animals. it was hard back in the mid 80's, the soya milk was naff, the ice cream, well, it was flavoured ice almost! but i made it. i personally think being vegan is easy. i do not know why vegetarians, who know vegans, know the arguments do not take that step. weakness i guess. waiting the barrage!.....RAT...... > What I meant about vegetarians not being very understanding was that > many vegetarians percieve vegans as extremists. Guest guest
yes a good point, but my view of vegetarians may be the opposite (at least of those that claim they are doing it for animal rights) because how can you love animals and extort them at the same time? getting milk and eggs is extortionary!!! so my view is that i am not extreme, i am only doing what is morally right, and everyone else just isnt extreme ENOUGH. i also usually tell people im vegetarian just because i dont like having to explain what vegan means 10 times a day, and in my opinion, vegetarianism IS vegan. vegetarian \Veg`e*ta " ri*an\, n. One who holds that vegetables and fruits are the only proper food for man. thats from dictionary.com folks. think about it. VEGE-tarian, that whole VEG thing doesnt really imply fish, dairy, or eggs does it? so if a lacto-ovo-vegetarian can eat dairy and eggs then why not just go one step further and become a carno-lacto-ovo-vegetarian? anyway if all else fails i usually tell them im allergic to animal products. is that really a lie? becauae lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose, goes away when you dont eat dairy. so we ARE allergic to it. spiggy FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place. Guest guest
Thats a good one - i never actually looked at it like that, I'll need to remember this for my next discussion/explanation/defence of veganism, which seems to be a daily occurence! Guest guest
A lot of people think vegans imagine everything to be animal-related and I tell them, " Uh...no, it's a fact that animal ingredients are so cheap and easy to get from slaughterhouses that a lot of products contain them! You think we like to pretend that we are hurting animals? It is vegans' ultimate wish that people do no exploit (and hurt and kill) animals , so that every product on the market wouldn't be animal-derived. " When I first told my friends that I turned vegan, my best friend went, " What??? Vegan??? I'd understand if you went vegetarian, but going vegan is COMPLETELY psycho! You'll die! Think about it...no more leather, no more silk, no more chewing gum, and no more a lot of things! " That's basically the kind of reaction that a lot of non-vegans gave me, too. Whenever I bake cakes and I ask my family to taste them, my mom usually goes, " No thanks..it's vegan. " She acts as if I've added poison or something! And I agree with K@'s husband, that perhaps a lot of vegetarians perceive vegans as extremists so that they can remain 'normal' and, at the same time, they can eat dairy and eggs...it's sad... I was thinking about recording what goes on in slaughterhouses. But here's the problem: people tend to deny the cruelty involved. When shown all the blood and stuff, they'd go, " Ewwww, don't show us that! That's disgusting! You sick freaks! " Well, yeah, that's the point, you idiots! It's sick, isn't it? But they'd much rather overlook the cruelty and continue enjoying their steaks. This can get so frustrating...I don't want to give people the chance to think me extreme, but at the same time, I'm unwilling to give in to eating something without first asking what's in it (amongst other habits like checking what materials clothes are made of when I'm shopping). My family hates it when I ask what's in this, what's in that at restaurants, so they have already concluded that vegans are a lot of trouble and are just plain weird. ARRRRGGGGGHHHH! Guest guest
right on, honor! soemtimes i get tired of phoning up companies and asking for ingredients lists... but ive found out a lot of interesting things that way. i really hate it when people think i am unhealthy. how can people be SO ignorant to assume that i am not getting any protein or calcium. HELLO cows are vegan (perhaps not in the uk) how do THEY get their protein? truth is, most people have too MUCH protein because of eating meat. too much protein causes things like bowel cancer, and it leaches calcium from your bones. so how am i unhealthy? last semester i took a nutrition class, and fought constantly with my professor. everyone in the class hated me, including the vegetarians! i proved to her that half ehr lecture material was unfounded and completely WRONG, and yet she never changed her notes. i felt like i was living in a dairy advert. yeah my parents also think i am nuts for not wearing wool. theyre like 'dont you get cold?' well yeah, but theres synthetic fabrics much warmer and thinner and less itchy than wool, that dont cause harm to sheep! although i have to admit i have a couch that i just recently found out is made of a type of silk. but its my favourite posession, and i dont want to give it up!!!! its like a million years old and been in the family for years. yeah i get frustrated when people refuse to taste my marvelous cooking jsut cos it doenst have anything that was slaughtered (unless you count plants yanked out of the ground as slaughtering)!! spiggs FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place.
