I have often used the 'I'm allergic to dairy products' line in restaurants

etc. I thought that would be safe and hoping the chef would be a little more

sympathetic than if I said I was vegan. [usually get a funny look then]

I have since found out from a friend who works in a hotel kitchen that the

chef will still put a little dairy into the food of people who say they are

allergic to dairy. This apparently is because the chef knows that a little

bit of dairy will not result in a person having an extreme reaction like a

nut allergy. So I have now abandoned that idea...must think of new one or

try to stick to places I can trust or at least see how food is prepared.

I never knew that, although I know for certain when I am fed dairy coz I

get the worst stomach cramps ever! It does really annoy me though, that

chefs would have the absolute bastardness to do that. I guess that's

why, more and more, I've moved to eating at vegan and vegetarian

restaurants only - I know that they will respect my choices.

But the worst offenders are still asian restaurants, IMHO. So many call

a dish vegetarian when it's chock-full of fish and chicken stock! I've

been served dishes that reeked of fish, but the waiter have instisted

are vegan. When I've sent them back, they've given me really dirty

looks.

As much as I understand that it can't be easy running a restaurant,

these people do have to respect the wishes of their patrons. If they

really feel they can't cater to a person's needs they should at least be

honest and say so, rather than hoping to get away with lying.

GRRR!!!!

chicken stock doesn't count!)

guess i just be lucky

one..there are a bunch of vegan and veggie resturants in my area, so, tisn't

hard to find good food eating out

2.. we eat out enough that folks get to know us, chefs actually walk up and

discuss wots on the menu, wot we can have, etc

sometimes its good to be a lush and drink out alot

*giggle*

(we tend to drink the same places we eat)

plus, there are just certain no-no's..mashed potatoes will have butter(or

worse)..thai often has shrimp paste..vietnamese has fish oil...miso has

bonito...anything fried has been cooked in the same vegetable oil they fry fish

in, etc..

i haven't had many problems..and i can generally tell if they screw me up, cuz i

get violently ill....whhhheeeeeee

fraggle

*stomach growls*

I get funny looks, too, when I say I'm vegan - not because they immediately

think, " Whacko! " but because very, very few people here know what veganism

is. So, this is where Honor starts to bribe the waiters/waitresses and

salespeople... When I go shopping, I tell the salesperson that I'm vegan.

I wait for that puzzled " what-the-heck-is-vegan-? " look, and then I explain

what it is (I usually do this on weekdays when all the salespeople in shops

are free and thus bored, so I have my way of starting some sorta interesting

discussion with them). They all gather around, I advertise veganism, with a

very, very friendly smile. And then they'd pick out the things that are

vegan and I usually buy the stuff. And at restaurants, if I get a dish that

has meat/dairy/eggs in it, I'd return it with a smile and a gentle apology

(that is, in fact, a complaint like, " Oh, dear, I'm so sorry...but I have to

return this because I think the waiter didn't quite take note that I'm

vegan...so sorry, dear, You'll have to take this back) with as little

sarcasm as possible. I give them a big tip, waiter is happy about it, he

apologizes to me, I apologize to him, and this is where I advertise again.

They probably still think I'm weird, but the point is to not let them hate

vegans in the first place! At least they wouldn't think vegans =

troublesome consumers, eh? Well, it may not be the best way to go about

this, but there is the possibility that it'd work.

Gosh, do I get enough of that in HK!
