If you're allowed to pick any number of items (up to 8) from the menu, then you can make 109600 selections (by summing 8 nPr x for x=1 to 8). However, as your friend said, there are only 256 ways of CHOOSing up to 8 items from a list of 8. Since McDonalds called it their McChoice menu, and not their McPick menu, the criticism is valid. There is a distinction between picking and choosing in mathematical terms, that is you cannot choose something more than once, but you can pick something more than once.
