However, its just occurred to me (and tell me if I’m being really extreme here) but aren’t truffles hunted by pigs? Or is that just a myth. And if they are hunted out by pigs does that mean that they’re not vegan? >>

But I always assumed that the word 'veganism' applied to food animals, not working animals such as Oxen and Horses drawing ploughs, mousing cats, or truffling pigs. Of course, the big question is what kind of working life and retirement the animal gets. I wouldn't be keen on eating organically farmed wheat from a field ploughed by a horse who was " retired " to a glue factory . I know some vegans at LV disapprove of all working horses. Personally, it's a bit like horse-riding - stressing the poor animal and selling it to a glue factory if it survives a few years is wrong, but riding a pet that doesn't seem to mind is probably okay. IMHO. (Whether it's okay for a vegan institution to employ a cat as a mouser is left as an excercise to the reader.) -- Ian McDonald http://www.mcdonald.me.uk/
