Guest guest
Oh, BTW, watch out for the dosa as well. Savoury pancakes that is. Sometimes they use butter on the griddle and if even if you ask for it in oil they still use the griddle to fry them. Contents are fine. john

Sometimes they use butter on the griddle > even if you ask for it in oil they still use the griddle to fry paratha can be the same - heavy on the butter on the other hand, i buy frozen paratha from local indian hypermarket-squeezed-into-a-shop and they're both butter-free and very good. go well with dhal for an quick post-work meal i think there is some awareness in india of dairy issues, and not just amongst jains. i've heard phrase " pure vegetarian " to describe these, but it's such a badly abused phrase that it's hard to tell anything from it. nice thing about being in india is that meaty places call themselves " non-vegetarian " ;-jey
Guest guest
Come to think about it, breads all round are one to watch; butter and eggs in naan too. Naan tends to be more of a Bengali/Bangladeshi/Islamic thing. It is interesting to note that 90% of so called Indian restaurants in this country are not run by Indians, and less by vegetarian Indians but by Bengali/Bangladeshis for historical reasons. Of course, most sweets are out too as they are almost all milk and sugar but a few scrape few. Look out for the ones made from chickpea flour.
