Guest guest
I did agree with Spiggy's assessment, initially. Though, I think that I most vehemently agree with her position that her " opinion of this fregan crap isn't very high " . I work at a workers' trading co-operative, and we most certainly DO take note of the waste matter there. It DOES have a direct effect upon what the buyers purchase in future. Most importantly, however -- and central to this argument -- is that the only way to reduce demand for animal products is to NOT consume them, whether they'd otherwise be wasted or not. Despite all of the cries to the contrary, I find the fregan lifestyle a bit unconscionable. It's a loaded debate, but I can't accept some of the theorising. I understand the concept of environmental impact and the detrimental effect of the Western lifestyle's appalling consumerist attitude. I won't disagree. Surely, however, there are myriad alternative ways by which to reduce and reuse. xxk@xx(feeling heady from hunger and unable to articulate well) Jane [jane] 12 February 2002 15:58 Vegan-Network (E-mail) [100% veg*n ] Re: not vegan but fregan!! > Mon, 11 Feb 2002 03:32:07 -0800 > " Priscilla Pelkey " <spiggy >Re: not vegan but fregan!! >i think the idea of fregan defeats the purpose of being vegan. its all >economics, supply and demand. if the demand goes down, because of people >refusing to eat meat, for a while there will be animals that die in vain, >but eventually as enough people go vegetarian (or vegan) theyll get the >hint and raise fewer animals. however, if theres always a fregan around >to consume the meat that would be thrown out, the demand will never go >down. This arguement doesn't really hold. Yes, supply in the meat industry is affected largely by demand for meat, but under capitalism it is " effective " demand that matters. If I have no money in my pocket, no meat producer is going to care about what I want/demand. My demand has no " effect " . No supermarket is ever going to do a stocktake of a skip, because they have no interest in finding out what people would consume for free. Take Pret A Manger, the sandwich chain, who apparently give their leftovers to homeless people. If all these people turned out to be vegan, do you really think Pret would make any fewer 'all day breakfast' sarnies and make more houmous ones instead? No, they base their decisions on what the paying sandwich eater wants. (Of course any pure as the driven snow homeless vegan wouldn't touch Pret because of McD's involvement, would they? Of course they would. To be so principled is a privilege most people can't afford.)
