Guest guest
Hi, Honor... My nine year old cat is vegan. He's quite healthy and his diet consists of a specially formulated kibble which I purchase from Veggiepet here in England. He also occasionally eats a moist recipe concocted with Vegecat supplement (which does contain both synthesized taurine and arachidonic acid). On his kibble, I put olive oil, nutritional yeast, and nori. He loves it! Anyroad, I thought that I'd share my Vegancats newsletter with you. Hope that you enjoy it. xxk@xx Alternative Pet Products Monthly Newsletter March 5, 2002 www.vegancats.com We apologize for the delay in getting this month's letter out. We had a very busy weekend tabling at VegFest! We had a great time at the festival. We want to thank Stewart and Amanda from Vegetarians of Washington (Seattle's newest non-profit, all volunteer organization) for giving us the opportunity to introduce hundreds of Northwest residents to the idea of feeding their companions a cruelty-free vegetarian diet. Plus we got a chance to meet many of our local customers whose faces we never get to see behind the cyber wall! John Feldmann, Goldfinger lead singer and dedicated vegan, helped staff the AFA table for 5 hours, handing out literature and promoting veganism! All the money raised from this show will be put into building a " faunavision " van, similar to the one seen in the movie " The Witness. " The van will be equipped with built-in TV screens for showing video footage of animals' living and dying conditions on farms, in labs, circuses, etc. ( " The Witness " can be purchased at Vegan Mercantile: http://www.veganmercantile.com/TOH.html) Book Submissions-- Hello, I am currently researching/writing/photographing a book about disabled people and the animals that love them unconditionally. Although I will be including guide and helping animals of all types, I am also gathering stories about other forms of this love. For instance, the cat who sits day after day with his dying person. Or the severely spastic person, out in his wheelchair, and while people stare shamelessly, his small dog sits on his lap, gazing up at him adoringly. I want the stories that show how animals do not care if we can or cannot do something, what we look like, or what social status we have attained; they love us just the same. It is universal, and it is a lesson worth learning by the humans on this planet. Any type of animal, wild or domestic; any type of disability; all will be considered. If anyone knows of such a bond, something that will warm the heart, please contact me in any of the following methods. Thank you so much for your time, and I am looking forward to hearing your stories. Warm Regards, Diane C. Guest guest
Hi k@, I just asked because, well, I said dogs and cats can be happy vegs to some non-vegan and he came back and said this: " Cats can NEVER be vegetarians. They require Taurine -- only found in animal protein -- to maintain their eyesight. " And I'm mostly in touch with canines...I said to myself, " Honor, you idiot! You know nothing about cats! " So, k@, taurine - is there a veg alternative or is there something different altogether that can replace it? Honor

There is a non animal based alternative to taurine and it is present in the commercial vegan cat food additives. There is also taurine in a drink called Red Bull which somebody on the list mentioned a while back. I was a little surprised because I assumed it would not be vegan due to the taurine present. It seems unlikely that they would go to the effort to source non animal taurine (after all, the drinks name derives from the source of the tauriine). So anyone know for sure? (not that I care, wouldn't buy they stuff anyway) Ben

So anyone know for sure? (not >that I care, wouldn't buy they stuff anyway) I'll get out my standard " Is Red Bull vegan? " answer for you... Red Bull claims that they use synthetic taurine on their web site at http://www.redbull.com/product/rumors/rumors04.html It is also listed as suitable in the Vegan Societies 'Vegan Shopper' although none of the other energy drinks are. (The chemical details of synthetic taurine, which is also used in vegetarian pet supplements, can be seen at http://www.sigma-aldrich.com/sigma-aldrich/t8691_safc_po.pdf ) Michael
