Cool. Hey, did I mention the vegan roleplayers list: prove there's more

I'm about to sign off I think so I'll take one last opportunity to make a

posting.

was looking so a sentence break in there but couldn't seem to fin one ;-)

Avocados are cool, shame they have to come from so far away, usually by air.

Quite a few come from Israel and I am trying to boycott Israeli products.

Smoking sucks and obviously you know that. But personally I don't think you

should kid yourself that roll ups are somehow more ethical. So okay, they

don't have the 3000 odd aditives that can be added to cigarettes, and the

advertising is less in your face (but still there). BUT THERE IS NO SUCH

THING AS ETHICALLY GROWN TOBACCO (i wrote tabasco for a second there). The

only vaguely ethical way it could be grown would be home grown and home

consumed. When tobacco is grown commercially it means that land is wasted,

used to grow cash crops rather than food. Even if this were done on a 'fair

trade' basis, it would still mean that productive land was being used to

produce an unnecessary and addictive luxury product (deadly too) when the

land could have been left to the native biodiversity or used to produce

food for humans. Of course you might point out that chocolate, sugar, tea

and coffee fall under the same criticism - and I would agree (while still

eating chocolate).

Anyhow, rant over ;-)

You should be able to find other vegans in kent. There is an active sab

group in that part of the world (all vegan (mostly)) and local contacts in

the vegan. I am always surprised by hearing about how isolated some vegans

feel. There are only 250,000 plus adult vegans in the country which is a

fairly small percentage but my social circles are predominately vegan. I've

been lucky enough to have lived in vegan households, resource centers,

communities for the last 12 years so I don't realise how difficult it can

be for other vegans.

I only really feel 'odd' when trying to eat out (posh style / not chips) or

when dating non vegans (which I've only done a couple of times). On the

subject (this thread used to come up a lot so I guess it has been covered

recently also), I have at times had a personal rule about only sleeping

with vegans. I have kinda dropped that now but still feel it makes some

sense considering the conflict that can arise over the simplist of things

like where to eat.

Glad to hear you wouldn't consider reversing your veganism. That is one of

my many pet hates - ex vegans. I really can abide the idea that somebody

could have acknowledged that there previous lifestyle was unethical and

then gone back to it anyway. But I guess I am just being defensive. After

all, somebody elses choices forces us to look at our own. That is after all

why meat eaters are so upset by vegans - we challenge them even if we say

nothing. Our choices indicate a judgement against them and so they turn to

the offensive in defence of their way of life.

any way, bed now.. bye all

Ben

P.S. yeah yeah I know I've done this already but... http://swiops.tincan.co.uk/

go there. try it out. comments and suggests welcome (but not spelling

corrections)

Yeah, i mostly prefer older punk stuff, but quite a mixture, of the top of

my head; Crass, Misfits, Clash, Rancid, Conflict, Discharge, Subhumans,

Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Zounds, Ramones, Chaos UK, Dead Boys, Partisans,

Exploited, GBH, One Way System, Swingin Utters, Pogues, Newtown Neurotics,

Levellers, New Model Army, UK Subs, Cramps, Oxymoron, Iggy pop/Stooges,

Ex-Cathedra, Stiff Little Fingers, Meteors, Ruts, Specials, Slackers etc. I

also love Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and i have an extensive Reggae

collection but i'd still say punk is my main thing.

Cheers,

Awesome list Ewan. I got to see Conflict ans Citizen Fish last year. Back in

98 I saw Subhumans, GBH and Stratford Mercenaries. Jello Biafria mc'd in San

Francisco for an Alternative Tenacles show. That's definately not all I'm into

but it's my heart. I like some mellow stuff too, listening to the Cure right

now. -Lacie

No, come back. I want those free Chasoium books! Call of Cthulhu is

*cool*! Yog Yog Soggoth!

No, we will grow, and we will become ... and army of roleplayers. Nay,

even, a sought after demographic. Cons will provide food we can eat. And

I will be able to say I'm a vegan without someone on the panel saying

" Seriously? You're a vegan? " as if he were asking about my plant of

origin and not my diet.

Well, I can dream, can't I?

I was talking about this with a friend the other day, we agreed that even

tho for quite a while after we got into punk we ate meat, now we find it

quite surprising to meet a punk who isn't at least vegetarian, apart from

wee skate/plastic punk types. Weird that, anyone else experience that? I

suppose its' just the sort of scene i've been hangin around. Oh well

vegan punx seem to be..there own little group here....most of the punx into

veganism lean much more toward the crusty end of the spectrum, and i lean much

more toward the street punk..soo...

there are a lot of veggie punx in my neck of the woods..tho, there doesn't seem

to be as many as before..at least amongst the folks i hang out with....a lot of

em dropped out, moved away, etc...

we have a thanxfernuthin gathering every november(thanksgiving day here in the

use to be jam packed and spilling out all over..the last few years i have been

I'd say the punx i associate with would definately fall under the crusty

category! Don't think there's such a huge street punk scene in Scotland.

I can see getting burnt out. I don't get down there much because it's a good

drive away. I've been to burnt ramen before, but on the 23rd I'm going to my

friend's 'retirement' party (he's taking off to travel) down in Oakland. Happy

B-day though! I'll bet we know a few of the same people. -Lacie

PS, did you used to travel?

ha, this is one of my gripes. i first got into punk in the late 70's,

pistols, that sort of stuff, then crass, conflict, even 82 punk like

abrasive wheels, blitz, demob etc etc. i became vegetarian in 1983, vegan in

84. i got to know a lot of anarcho punks, all of which were at least

vegetarian. i got involved in direct action, demos, sabbing. by the early

90's punk/hardcore appeared to be losing the spark it had back in the early

80's, the vast majority of people in punk/hardcore no longer seemed to care.

unfortunatly, this still seems to be the case today. we played a festival in

belgium 4 or 5 years back. i got called into the bar/food area to get our

free food. i walked in and was like " what the fuck is that smell, it's

fuckin chicken!! " i couldn't beleive it. all these american bands (warzone,

can't remember the other ones, there was one where the soinger is well into

sea shepheard, i'm sure somebody knows their name, i just can't remember it,

ah, is it ignite??) apparantly INSISTED on having meat! i was so pissed off.

there were many people in the crowd too that were just into hardcore, the

ideas that some of the bands were expressing seemed un-important.

anyway, i know exactly what you are saying. when i meet someone who'sd into

punk/hardcore and i find out they eat meat, i just can't beleive it! so many

people have been exposed to the whole cruelty propaganda, but they ignore

it. pisses me off...........RAT.............did any of that make sense?

i wasnt even alive until 1983. thats amazing. i WISH i could have been

veggie in 83! but no my parents are still very very against it. i didnt

get into punk til the early 90s. the first concert i went to was NKOTB!!

hehehehehe. veggie punks are definitely becomming the minority, but i

will still keep sitting at information tables at shows. as long as were

I've only been into punk since about last year, but I've been under

the impression that its all about freedom of expression, whoever, and

whatever you are.

I can't stand all the posses of Korn, Limp Bizkit, and all these

other post " wish I was " punk bands, Blink 182 make me want to puke

(I think thats what they intended though). But I think its better

than having loads of michael jackson fans, or girls screaming in

ectasy over Cliff Richard or the Beatles.

Like I went into a burger bar once in Brighton that as well as its

deathburgers advertised its " 100% vegetarian burger " . All the people

who were in there were wearing Korn teeshirts and Slipknot, what

have you. I immediately felt intimidated, and felt like a warthog

walking into a lions' den. I asked about the burger, turned out it

was made with egg and milk and cooked in the same tray as the

chicken burgers! So much for 100% vegetarian. I left before you

could say " * & ^%$£ " .

Point is, thats what I think people who eat meat should be like. If

they're happy being carnivorous, let them display it, I don't want

any superficiality when dealing with bloodthirsty vultures. I'm so

sick of people eating meat and then pretending to be compassionate

or caring or " nice " people.

Goths - the same - if you're obsessed with darkness and death at

least let everyone know who you are.

I know what you mean. I was in class a couple of days ago, and was

suffering the usual questionnaire about veganism. At one point I

informed the inquisitionists that it was thought that the reason why

meat eating humans like bacon so much is because it tastes like

human meat (true theory). Then to my surprise a punk, who I was

sitting next to, said: " yep. It is. " and said no more, as if to say,

yeah I know and I eat it and I don't care.

OK he was more of a havelotsoffunandgotolotsofgigs punk than a

crusty conflict punk. I'm shy and had been wanting to get to know

him out of class to meet other punks in my vicinity but I'm a bit

put off, I guess I was secretly hoping he was a vegetarian or

something.
