Guest guest
I am university training to be a teacher. We were learning today about citizenship in the national curriculum and racial and religous tolerance. I feel that it's very sad that we only learn to be tolerant towards races and religions. Should we not be learning to be tolerant of peoples views regardless? I agree that this must be an essential part of the course however, I am concerned. This is a step forward from traditional racist views of the empire but we are in danger of creating a snobbery about racial tolerance. Many people will say to vegetarians and vegans " I don't care it is only a cow, " etc but is this really any different from religous ridicule (if this is the right word). Why are our beliefs viewed as different to a religion and why do people feel free to criticise us when it would be distasteful to do this when refering to a religion? Shouldn't we be taught tolerance for all beliefs weather religious or secular?
