BAVRT is NOT a drop-in dinner event. As always, you come under your own liability for all events. Pass the word to your friends. This is not an exclusive net-folks only event. This is not an activist group or singles event. Note that if you plan to attend this dinner, you can order only vegetarian dishes, even if the restaurant serves other stuff. If you have suggestions for future sites, please e-mail them to . If you want to volunteer host a BAVRT dinner, please let me know!! ===================================================================== Contents #1) Approaching milestone #2) This month's trek #3) Looking for a volunteer host in SF #4) Last month's trek #5) News Section #6) NON-BAVRT related stuff (feel free to skip) --- #1) Approaching milestone http://www.veginfo.com/bavrt/restaurantlist.html Many of you have been long time BAVRT members, but can you guess how many restaurants BAVRT has been to? The answer is given in the sequence number (first column) in the visited restaurant list. Slowly but surely, we are creeping up towards the 100 mark. All this time, we have not repeated even one restaurant! May be we can have a big gala event for the 100th trek. --- #2) This month's trek Howard, a long time BAVRT member and also the driving force behind East Bay Vegetarians, agreed to host this month's restaurant trek. We are headed to Kamal Palace in Berkeley for a vegan Indian thali dinner. Thali is the name generally used for a complete meal. So we are set for a full fixed price dinner ($15 including tax+tip). Howard emailed me this info. The meal will be completely vegan -- soy milk and soy yogurt will be used in the few places necessary. choice of one of three vegan main entrees: -- Aloo Gobi [cauliflower and potato] -- Eggplant and potato -- Bhindi Masala [spiced Indian okra] each thali will also come with 3 vegetable cups -- -- Mushroom Mutter [peas and mushrooms] -- Channa Masala [garbanzos] -- mixed vegetable masala The Nan/bread will be made with a touch of soy milk and no ghee and everyone will get a small fruit cup and a cup of chai [spiced tea] made with soy milk at the end of the meal. Rice will also be served. Sounds like quite a bit of tasty food! Having never been to this restaurant, looking forward to this delicious treat. Please remember to RSVP soon! --- #3) Looking for a volunteer host in SF See " What is involved in hosting a dinner? " at http://www.veginfo.com/bavrt/hosting.html for details. If you are interested in hosting a dinner in SF next month, please contact me ASAP. Of course, I am more than interested in hearing from volunteer hosts all around the bay area! --- #4) Last month's trek http://www.veginfo.com/bavrt/restaurantlist.html Ann hosted last month's dinner at the brand new Bay Leaf Cafe in Palo Alto. This restaurant has an extensive menu and most of them are unusual and delicious. Other than ice cream, everything in the restaurant is vegan. Most things are made using organic foods and they even indicate the percentage of organic content in their menu! Because of their extensive menu, they use small type fonts in their menu - it helps to have good eye sight to read them :-) We had 23 people show up for dinner. There were 8 cancellations and there were around 5 people in the wait list. Everybody gave very good marks in their feedback. There are free parking lots behind restaurant and also across the street in the same block. Couple of things to note. The restaurant is open for business, but they have not had their grand opening yet! The other rather unusual part is that they have not put their restaurant name anywhere on the building (they are waiting for their grand opening?) This restaurant is very easy to find as it is on Ramona Ave St and very close to University Ave. If you are anywhere around Palo Alto, check out this restaurant. Ann did a superb job in selecting the restaurant and managing all the details of hosting. --- #5) News Section ( If you come across news items, veg or otherwise, in the mainstream media that may be of potential interest to BAVRT members, please forward me the URL. ) a) Teen Vegetarians Healthier Than Meat-Eaters - Study http://story.news./news?tmpl=story & cid=585 & ncid=753 & e=2 & u=/nm/20020512/\ sc_nm/health_vegetarians_dc_1 " It seems that rather than viewing adolescent vegetarianism as a difficult phase or fad, the dietary pattern could be viewed as a healthy alternative to the traditional American meat-based diet, " epidemiologist Cheryl Perry and colleagues wrote in Sunday's issue of the journal Archives of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine. b) Trade war fear as public resists GM food http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/0,4273,4408342,00.html " The vast majority of people believe that labelling of GM food is essential and parents remain adamant they would prefer not to feed it to their children.
