Guest guest
Has anyone else heard about this cruel delicacy in France? Beleive it or not, it's starlings! I recently heard they only serve it in certain 'underground' restaurants. The reason being that what they are doing is illegal. The birds fly near the windows of the restaurants and are then caught in a net. Next they are kept in a tiny box filled with grain. Because it's dark inside, the bird doesn't know if it's night or day, and can't do anything else, so it just eats and eats until it gets extremely fat. When a customer orders one, the bird is taken out of the box and [this is the cruelest bit] drowned in alcohol!! It is then boiled and given to the customer, who apparently has to wear a cover over their head while they eat it. These are such great lengths to go to, and for what? I can't understand this sick practice at all. My details are a bit fuzzy also. [i blame that on old age too!] I have been corrected and told that it's actually sparrows. I heard this was included in a T.V. documentary shown on this side of the pond recently. Another detail [although this probably isn't relevant] is that they put them in the oven, not boil them like I said before. Can't beleive this has been going on that long, though! I also found out they are not actually allowed to 'sell' them in the restaurants, but seems it's okay to 'serve' them. Which makes this even more crazy if they are doing this and gaining nothing from it!!
