I went to V1 with my parents last Saturday. I didn't know it was run by a

vegan, but I guess that would explain why I could eat most of the things

there. I had doughnuts for the first time in about 5 years and I was SOOOOO

happy :o) I found it a really positive experience - there was a queue out

the door at 3pm, it was that popular. The only obvious dairy was the offer

of cheese or vegan cheese on a burger and the frozen yoghurt stand. Oh yeah,

and milk for tea and butter on the teacakes if you wanted.

Counting V1 I only have personal knowledge of two businesses run by vegans

(AFAIK), both of which sell a limited number of dairy items (the other one

is Cooks Delight in Berkhampstead - a well stocked organic shop selling a

good selection of veg, groceries, wine, beer, clothing, toiletries, books

and other stuff, well worth a visit). And yes, it makes me a little

uncomfortable but I know what vegetarians can be like - they seem to think

they've made enough sacrifice, and if they can't get their milk and butter

they'll probably go and do all their shopping/eating somewhere else for the

most part (this is said through experience of going shopping with my mum, by

the way, a vegetarian for about 20 years now, but who can't even manage a

week without dairy - I despair sometimes). At least these businesses can

offer an alternative which they *might* consider buying.

I keep hearing how the vegan movement now is at the same stage the

Vegetarian one was around 10-15 years ago. The more places we can get stuff

with the words " suitable for vegans " on, the more people will hopefully be

interested - I think it would be unrealistic to expect businesses to go

wholly vegan outside of London when there are so few of us - I would rather

not see any more of those depressing boarded up windows and pathetic notices

thanking a handful of customers for their support, but I bet in a few years

time we will be able to realistically make the demand for animal free

shopping from more places (I hope so, anyway).
