What a lovely post to wake up to! I really loved to hear about your

forest garden it sounds like heaven! Do you have many birds in it? Thanks

for a lovely letter.

Love Shell.

Thanks Shell... I only started planting up the trees in the forest

garden this winter, so there isn't a huge amount there yet to

actually see, but my friend Ron who has the neighbouring plot has

been cultivating his as a forest gareden for some 8 or 9 years, so it

is comparitively mature- there is alot of wildlife on the site as a

whole as many of the plots are neglected and returning to their

natural state, as I said in my earlier post parts of the site are

through the process of succession returning to woodland, being

colonised by ash and some oak mainly...

probably the most exciting thing for me on my particular plot was

lifting up some carpet that put down as a clearance mulch last summer

and finding 8 slow worms underneath... there are also foxes galore,

in fact I decided where to put paths by following the fox runs

through the long grass...

Talking of slow worms, i found one in one of the compost bins at work

last week, then about 5 minutes later I saw a grass snake swimming in

our wildlife pond, which was excelent, it came really close- I just

stood really still watching it- a magical moment! I've also started

created a forest garden at my workplace today, I've been pushing

management about it for two years, finally started putting in the

trees today! Unfortunately the trees are pot grown rather than bare

rooted (which would have gone in in winter) which I would have

prefered, but at least it is happening at last!

More tree planting tommorrow, the ground is solid clay, baked hard by

recent sunshine and needs a pick axe to break it up, so I'm knackered!

Cheers Graham
