Guest guest
i bloody well knew and said over and over they were gonna say this gawd, so damn predictable!!!! even if these fires are a. helped by global warming b. years of " only you can prevent forest fires " have helped build up years of tinder and fuel in forests were fire is a natural thing c. thinning and cutting of forests creates more fuel and makes fires worse by making trees all second and third growth(old growth can survive better) leaving branches nad " waste trees " all over, and building raods which help spread fires by producing corridors d. bush is a ninny WASHINGTON - The Bush administration blamed environmental groups yesterday for contributing to raging forest fires such as the ones in Arizona and Colorado by blocking the federal government's effort to remove dangerous underbrush. Green groups have repeatedly gone to court to challenge the U.S. Forest Service's attempts to thin out forests by letting timber companies move in and cut trees. Efforts to manage forests have " been stopped by opponents in the courts, " Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman told CNN television. " There will be some product that will be taken out of the forest, " Veneman said, referring to timber companies. " But some of these places where (environmental groups) are complaining, there aren't even saw mills near. " The Forest Service is a unit of the Agriculture Department. The agency has been trying to rid Western lands of low underbrush that serve as fuel and aid the spread of wildfires, especially during drought. Environmental groups have objected to companies harvesting timber from many U.S. forests. They argue that cutting trees in federal forests benefits big companies and interferes with nature. Forest Service officials recently said that environmental groups often delay a project by filing a lawsuit in court without analyzing the long-term impact of thinning the forest. Activist groups said the situation was more complicated than the Bush administration portrays. " It is an oversimplification to blame any special interest group in Washington to make a political issue of the fire problem, " said Keith Ashdown, a spokesman with Taxpayers for Common Sense. " Our fire management problems began before Veneman's watch and they will continue until the Forest Service gets dead serious about truly starting to prevent wildfires in the Western United States, " he said. The United States is facing one of its worst fire seasons in recent years. The Forest Service said Tuesday that more than 2.5 million acres (1 mln hectares) have burned this year, nearly 1.2 million (485,000 hectares) more than at the same point in 2000. Firefighters continue to battle nearly 20 large fires in nine Western states. They are beginning to gain control over a blaze about 150 miles (240 km) northeast of Phoenix that has burned more than 330,000 acres (134 hectares). President George W. Bush made federal aid available to parts of Arizona yesterday after seeing charred land near the resort town of Show Low. Colorado, which also has been declared a disaster area, is slowly gaining control over the biggest wildfire in state history. The 18-day-old Hayman fire, which has burned about 137,000 acres (54,800 hectares) 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Denver, is now 70 percent contained.
