Help Stop Lobster Torture

Love Maine Lobsters, Inc., is selling a product called the Microwave Lobster

Steamer that is intended to replace boiling water as the method for killing and

cooking lobsters. The Microwave Lobster Steamer is an extremely inhumane product

that will cause tremendous, unnecessary pain for lobsters. Instead of being

killed relatively quickly by being placed headfirst in boiling water, which in

itself is a painful death, lobsters in a microwave will be slowly cooked over a

period of six minutes. During the six minutes, the lobsters will undergo intense

and unimaginable suffering as their bodies are heated piece by piece.

 

Love Maine Lobsters reports that it commissioned independent laboratory testing

prior to introducing the Microwave Lobster Steamer, and the testing demonstrated

that microwaving is the most " humane " method to kill a lobster. We have viewed

the results of this independent testing, and the findings do not substantiate

these claims. The results merely prove that lobsters die more quickly using the

Microwave Lobster Steamer. The results do not take into account the fact that

lobsters are cooked piece by piece in a microwave or the fact that their brains

are killed the fastest when they are placed headfirst into boiling water.

 

In the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) 2000 Panel on Euthanasia

report, it states, " Microwave ovens designed for domestic and institutional

kitchens are absolutely unacceptable for euthanasia. "

 

One of the nation's leading experts on lobsters, Jelle Atema, Ph.D., director of

Boston University's marine program, says: " The heating in a microwave is often

very focused in particular areas, so a microwave could actually hurt the lobster

for awhile in places where it wouldn't kill him. He would suffer for a few

minutes before he died. Whereas when you place a lobster head first in boiling

water, it is the most certain way to kill the brain the fastest and would cause

the least amount of suffering. "
