A few years ago (late 80's?) there was a big controversy about Boots

products - basically they were trying to deflect the bad publicity

that they recieved over their animal testing policy. There were two

ways that they tried to avoid it - 1) got a third party company to do

their testing for them and thus they could proclaim that " Boots does

not test on animals " , and 2) not test the final products even though

all of the ingredients were tested on animals, so they could say " Our

products are not tested on animals).

Personally, I've got used to never buying anything from Boots from

back in those days. There are loads of alternatives. I think one of

the best is Urtekram from Denmark for shampoos and soaps etc. They

are a vegan company who use wind power in their factory (rumour has

it their products are shipped world-wide by a team of vegan rowers!

Only kidding!), they also don't use SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulphate or

whatever its called), which has been implicated as a carcinogen.

As for make-up, I'm not really in position to advise, but the vegan

women I've known that wear makeup have never had to go without! If

you're in the UK, get a copy of the Cruelty Free Shopper (from the

Vegan Society), I think its about a fiver - it lists loads of

products. BWC (Beauty Without Cruelty) is a name that I remember

(wholly vegetarian, most vegan). I think some Aveda products are

vegan, as are Body Shop. There may be some wholly vegan makeup

companies that would be more deserving of your support, though.

Cheers,

Rob
