If you want to volunteer host a BAVRT dinner, please let me know!! ===================================================================== Contents #1) Hear Ye! Next month in October 2002, BAVRT will be hosting its 100th restaurant outing! What a milestone!! In all this time, BAVRT has not repeated a restaurant. If you have any special suggestions for next month, let me know ASAP... --- #2) This month's trek Let us see what delectable dinner, our host has planned for us. First of all, Diane is our host for this month. She is well known as the gracious host of Contra Costa Vegan potlucks for many years. She handpicked the following yummy vegan buffet for us this month at Madras - North & South Indian Cuisine. The menu is Vegetable Samosas Masala Dosas Utthappam Idli with Vada Sambar Chana Masala Baingan Bartha Biryani Rice Basmati Rice As far as I can tell, other than the Samosas and Basmati rice, everything else is an entree! So be prepared and come hungry. Make sure to RSVP soon. --- #3) Last month's trek http://www.veginfo.com/bavrt/restaurantlist.html Phil hosted last month's dinner at Zeni Ethiopian Restaurant. We had an all you can eat vegan buffet - there were five dishes plus injerra and bread. There were 26 people who showed up, 7 cancellations and 5 no-shows. The restaurant has normal tables and chairs. But just for us, they created an Ethiopian flair by putting some very low circular tables and chairs (that were almost the same height). Suffice to say, some folks found this arrangement somewhat uncomfortable and even complained about this. The food was an entirely different matter. It was exceptionally good and most folks gave it very high marks (even one 11 out of a maximum 10). The food was plentiful as they kept on refreshing the buffet. Towards the end of the dinner, we had some live entertainment in the form of music :-) After dinner, some folks went for desserts, other folks went elsewhere and the rest just hung around for a while talking. --- #4) Being a no-show Last month, we had 5 no-shows (thanks to the thoughtful folks who had canceled, when they found that they couldn't make it). On top of this, the restaurant folks told me that they made additional food as a treat for our group (just in case some folks were hungry). Net result was that the restaurant took a sizable loss just for hosting BAVRT. This caused quite a bit of unpleasantness at the end of an otherwise wonderful dinner, as the restaurant expected payment for the no-shows. Some BAVRT members were also mad at the no-shows, as the no-shows would have substantially increased the cost to the folks who played by the rules. Folks, the idea of BAVRT is to help restaurants that serve veg*an food. It is not to penalize them (or make other BAVRT members suffer by making them pay more). It is easy to RSVP and it is easy to cancel (my phone number is given right in the beginning, so that you can call it in, if something happens at the last moment). As you all know, the RSVP privileges of no-shows are progressively restricted. So if a person is a multiple no-show (does not show up for multiple dinners) they are essentially prevented from attending future BAVRT dinners. Don't be a spoil sport. That said, I wish to express thanks to the super majority of BAVRT members who are conscientious folks and play by the rules! --- #5) News Section ( If you come across news items, veg or otherwise, in the mainstream media that may be of potential interest to BAVRT members, please forward me the URL. ) a) Monsanto Patent Ruling Upheld http://story.news./news?tmpl=story & u=/ap/20020906/ap_on_bi_ge/canada_mo\ nsanto_lawsuit_2 " Schmeiser had argued the herbicide-resistant canola seed arrived in his field by accident, either from blowing off a passing truck or by cross-pollination.
