Guest guest
At least half a dozen dead porpoises have washed up on beaches in Washington state and British Columbia in the last week, spurring speculation that they were killed when the USS Shoup, a Navy destroyer, used its high-intensity sonar last Monday as it traveled near the San Juan Islands off the Washington coast. Observers reported that as many as 100 porpoises leapt through the water at high speed in an attempt to get away from the sound; about 20 orcas and a minke whale were also seen fleeing. The blasts of sound could have damaged the sensitive hearing of the marine mammals, which would impair their ability to navigate and find food. The Navy has come under criticism for using this type of sonar, which some scientists believe led to the deaths of seven beaked whales and the beaching of 17 others in the Bahamas in 2000. But what troubles enviros more than these incidents is legislation being pushed by the Bush administration that would exempt the military from environmental laws, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act. straight to the source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 13 May 2003 <http://www.gristmagazine.com/forward.pl?forward_id=1118> straight to the source: Bremerton Sun, Christopher Dunagan, 12 May 2003 <http://www.gristmagazine.com/forward.pl?forward_id=1119> straight to the source: Bremerton Sun, Christopher Dunagan, 08 May 2003 <http://www.gristmagazine.com/forward.pl?forward_id=1120>
Guest guest
Hi Fraggle, But what troubles enviros more than these incidents is legislation being pushed by the Bush administration that would exempt the military from environmental laws, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act. While these incidents are saddening, what are we supposed to do? We gotta have military defense. Even India, which is supposed to be a more pacifist country, has a military. I asked my Indian friend why, and he said there's nothing wrong with having a defense. I know there's so much more to this issue, but honestly, what are we supposed to do? So many people think America is the devil, and you just can't have a nice little talk with some of these oppressing leaders of other countries, and declare "world peace." What are the alternatives, Fraggle? *This message was brought to you by: Amy >EBbrewpunx > >HarmNone , homstead_solarium , , vegan-network > obviously they were terrorist whales working for al queda and bad mouthed enron >Tue, 13 May 2003 20:23:56 EDT > >At least half a dozen dead porpoises have washed up on beaches in >Washington state and British Columbia in the last week, spurring >speculation that they were killed when the USS Shoup, a Navy >destroyer, used its high-intensity sonar last Monday as it traveled >near the San Juan Islands off the Washington coast. Guest guest
Even stranger, with regards to women, Iraq was one of the most progressive Muslim countries. OK, it was a dictatorship, but women in Iraq had far more rights than women in, say, Saudi Arabia.
