the word to your friends. This is not an exclusive net-folks only

event. This is not an activist group or singles event. Note that

if you plan to attend this dinner, you can order only vegetarian

dishes, even if the restaurant serves other stuff.

If you have suggestions for future sites, please e-mail them to

. If you want to volunteer host a BAVRT dinner,

please let me know!!

#1) This month's trek

Tammy & Chris, founders of " Bay Area Vegetarians " and Lyman are

teaming up to host this month's BAVRT dinner. Their choice is Sto-A,

the upscale all vegetarian gourmet restaurant that opened in

Palo Alto this year.

The simplest way to describe the restaurant is to provide a link

to a review that came in San Francisco Chronicle. Please see

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2003/06/20/PN304514.DTL

For BAVRT, the restaurant is offering two choices.

A prix fixe vegan menu ($38 + 18% gratuity + tax) composed of

- Soup: Seasonal vegetable soup ($7)

- Starters: Green salad with toasted hazelnuts & Fuji apple

ribbons ($6.5)

- Appetizers: Rice rolls with fresh herbs & peanut sauce ($9)

-or-

Green Mango salad with cherry tomatoes, scallions &

Forbidden black rice ($12)

- Main Course: Blackeyed pea fritters with olive oil mashed

potatoes & garlic-wilted greens ($19)

-or-

Quinoa croquettes with sautéed wild mushrooms &

sesame-rubbed greens ($18)

- Desserts: Chocolate sorbet with chocolate-dipped

strawberries ($7)

-or-

Apricot gallettes with port wine reduction ($7)

Price given in brackets above is the a la carte price

(set menu price is a discount compared with the price

of individual items).

Please RSVP by Sep 17th and also indicate whether you want

to go for the prix fix menu or the a la carte option.

#2) Bay Area Vegetarians (BAV)

http://www.bayareaveg.org

Tammy & Chris started Bay Area Vegetarians (BAV), a San Francisco

Bay Area wide group for vegans, vegetarians, veg*n-inclined and

interested people to find community & support with like-minded

folks. BAV supports, encourages & connects local veg*n community

through planned monthly events, online discussion forum, mailing

lists and educational outreach. In the community spirit, all of

BAV events are organized by volunteers, and membership is free.

Visit BAV's website for upcoming events and more information on

joining. Help BAV make the Bay Area more veg-friendly!

#3) Last month's trek

Ana organized an extremely successful dinner last month at Red Sea

Restaurant in Oakland. BAVRT received truly red carpet treatment

from this restaurant. Though this was a veg/non-veg Ethiopian

restaurant, they collected all their vegan dishes in a separate

menu, to make our ordering easier. They also cheerfully gave

separate checks to everybody who attended.

39 people attended last month's dinner. Most people gave very

high marks for their excellent food and superb service. Some folks

raised the following items also - the acoustics of the room was

less than stellar, particularly with such a big crowd. Many people

had to ask to get drinking water at the table. Wonder whether this

is a cultural issue, as this has happened in other restaurants also.

After dinner, we went to Mondo Gelato for vegan desserts.

#4) Car-less lifestyles by choice

Last month, I wrote a small blurb about my current car-less

lifestyle. Many folks wrote to me about their own experiments about

going car-less by choice! This is not too much of a surprise, as

BAVRT is composed of many highly unconventional, independent folks.

People had tried these experiments in multiple states and multiple

cities. Many did this successfully for many years (some for more

than 10 years). One person mentioned about her family going

car-less by choice, across multiple generations! Awesome...
