Help Protect an Endangered Species

Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico has inserted a

provision – an anti-environmental “rider” – into the

FY2004 Energy and Water spending bill that would

attack the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and threaten

the very existence of the critically endangered Rio

Grande silvery minnow.

If the rider is approved, a federal water project in

the Rio Grande basin in New Mexico would be exempted

from complying with the ESA. Water projects on the

Rio Grande with their dams, canals, and levees are in

large part responsible for the decline of the minnow.

Unless enough water is provided from the projects,

stretches of the river could go dry, killing the few

remaining minnows.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Send a fax urging your Senators to oppose the

Domenici “extinction rider” to the FY04 Energy and

Water spending bill. The vote may come to the floor of

the Senate as early as Friday, September 12, so please

send your fax today.

The fate of the extremely endangered Rio Grande

silvery minnow is at stake.

I used to live in New Mexico, and this could be a huge problem. The Rio Grande river has slowly been drying up. Its almost to the point of just doing it naturaly(sp, sorry early in the morning), and this will just help it along even faster. If you have a chance, help this beautiful river and the minnows :)EBbrewpunx wrote:

I didn't realise the situation for rivers was so bad there.
