On Sunday, March 7th, the San Francisco Zoo killed Calle, a 37-year-old Asian elephant, who was at the SF Zoo for seven years. Calle was taken from her family and home in the wild (Asia) when she was roughly one year old. In the wild, Calle would be in the prime of her life, but at the zoo she suffered from chronic infections of her bones and feet. These and other captivity-induced health problems caused her health to deteriorate so badly that she had trouble walking and was constantly dosed with painkillers. The lack of space in zoos create health problems in elephants. In the wild, elephants travel up to fifty miles a day. In captivity, small spaces (a few acres or less) make adequate exercise impossible. The importance of exercise to good health in elephants is widely known. Captivity in zoos creates other health problems for elephants such as arthritis, joint disease, foot problems, tuberculosis (which is transmitted from humans to elephants), psychological problems (stereotypic swaying and rocking), skin problems and reproductive problems. View the article in the San Francisco Examiner here. Write a letter to the editor of San Francisco papers (The San Francisco Chronicle) (The San Francisco Examiner) calling for the zoo to move its three remaining elephants to a sanctuary that can properly care for them. Also write to papers in your area alerting community members of the inability of zoos to properly care for elephants and other wild animals. Please also contact the San Francisco Zoological Society to urge them to do what's best for the remaining elephants by sending them to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, which has agreed to pay for transportation of the elephants. Send letters to: The San Francisco Zoological Society 1 Zoo Road San Francisco, CA 94132 Call: 415-753-7080 Fax: 415-681-2039. Help End The Canadian Seal Hunt The notorious Canadian Seal hunt takes place off the east coast of Canada and is heavily subsidized by Canadian taxpayers-the majority of whom are opposed to the slaughter of beautiful seals. This is the largest slaughter of marine mammals in the world, and it will not end unless enough of us take action. The seals are killed with hakapiks, rifles and shotguns. A quota allows over one million harp seals to be killed over a three-year period. If a seal is killed or injured but gets lost under ice, her dead body will not be included in the quota. Experts in 2001 studied the seal hunt and found disturbing cruelty. They found that 79% of the sealers did not check to see if an animal was dead before skinning it. When the skulls of the seals that were killed were examined, 42% were found to have minimal or no fractures, suggesting a high probability that these seals were conscious when skinned. For more information about the brutal Canadian Seal hunt, visit here. Boycott Canada. Register your intention to boycott Canada with three key people involved in tourism. Tell them you will boycott Canada until the killing stops. Email them at the following addresses: Mckenzie.Michele; Minister.Industry; harrower.ian Please clearly and politely state that you will be boycotting Canada until the cruel seal hunt is halted. ----------------------------- 4. Plan an Event for the Great American Meatout! The annual Great American Meatout is next Saturday, March 20, and is a perfect opportunity to get active for farmed animals. If you're not already vegetarian, start on Saturday! If you're not already vegan, start on Saturday! Either way, The Great American Meatout is a perfect opportunity to promote a vegetarian diet or to encourage people to give up meat for a day. Visit the website here for event-planning ideas. You can order materials at that site or from several other animal organizations, including Vegan Outreach, Farm Sanctuary and PETA. IDA is excited to be producing new brochures about vegetarianism in upcoming months. We will let you know when they are available! There are peace rallies across the country on March 20, so you may want to hand out FARM's leaflets promoting a peaceful, vegetarian diet, visit http://www.meatout.org for more information or you may want to save your event for another day. Either way, animal on factory farms never get a rest, so every day of the year is a perfect day to promote vegetarianism. ----------------------------- 5. IDA's Monthly Giving Program: Join Today!
