Guest guest
Padre Island National Seashore, off the southeastern coast of Texas, is the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world and home to more than a dozen threatened and endangered species, including the Kemp's ridley sea turtle. Unfortunately for those critters, the seashore sits atop oil and gas deposits whose rights are controlled by private companies and the state of Texas. Soon, a phalanx of industry vehicles could be grinding across the beach in search of fossil fuels, and activists have very little leverage to stop them. Michelle Nijhuis reports on this coastal controversy -- only on the Grist Magazine website. only in Grist: North Padre Island faces imminent drilling -- in Main Dish <http://www.gristmagazine.com/maindish/nijhuis032304.asp?source=daily> 7. DO GOOD Take Action to Halt Padre Island Drilling If you don't care for the prospect of oil and gas development on North Padre Island, a critical nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, then make your voice heard: Sign a petition that calls on President Bush to intervene and protect the seashore from development. do good: Take action to save sea turtles and other wildlife <http://www.gristmagazine.com/cgi-bin/forward.pl?forward_id=2201>
