W11 3TP on Thursday the 26th August at 1pm. Most of you are being sent this email just for information ... the first batch (to those who may be able to attend) was sent out 2 days ago ... and below is the first long banner I made - not quite finished ... needs some 'visual impact' as well ... a couple of pictures .... Keep your fingers crossed it all goes smoothly and that the weather will be kind to us. Regards, Vesna Dear Friend of the Animals, There's no time to explain the course of events which led to organising the forthcoming demonstration outside the Greek Embassy, but as you can gather from this short notice, it's a recent development ... and this is why we need as much support as we can harness. Please read the press release Anneka Svenska (explained below) and I compiled, which we hope you can distribute widely and, if possible, without delay (sorry!). This peaceful demonstration is intended to remind people that while poisoning of dogs and cats in Greece has made headlines prior to the Olympics, there will be countless future victims, until animal welfare laws are taken seriously and are seen to be implemented and not only talked or written about. If you can join us on the day (and we sure hope you can!), you may consider 'dressing for the occasion' (in black, or having a black armband, symbolising the death of the victims of poisoning) or bring along a couple of placards, or maybe even a small coffin / wreath .... with a black ribbon on which words: 'In memory of all the victims of poisoning ...' (or similar) written in red ..... let your imagination take over ... you'll think of something. It would be good to know how many people we can expect to turn up, therefore it would be appreciated if you could confirm your attendance (vesna) , if you think you may be able to join us. Apologies again for giving so little notice, but it couldn't be helped. Kind regards, Vesna ============================================ URGENT! ANIMALS IN GREECE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! PETITION AND PROTEST AGAINST THE ON-GOING POISONING OF DOGS AND CATS IN GREECE AND A CALL FOR GREECE TO IMPLEMENT ITS ANIMAL WELFARE POLICIES There will be a press call outside the Greek Embassy, 1a Holland Park, London. W11 3TP on Thursday the 26th August at 1pm. Carry-On girl Anneka Svenska and a band of well known celebrities, from both the sporting world and television, will hand over a petition calling for a stop to the cruel extermination of strays, which is widespread throughout Greece. Sadly, by now over 80% of all Greek feral dogs in Athens have been either poisoned or thrown into poorly run shelters, in an effort to 'clean up the streets' for the Olympics. The petition acknowledges this fact and it also expresses concern about the future. The Olympic Games will soon be over, but animal welfare problems will remain. The petition is supported by the Greek Animal Rescue, a UK registered charity which endeavours to alleviate some of the suffering, by providing funds for the care of needy animals, supporting neutering projects, helping with re-homing of rescued animals etc. - GAR is calling upon the Greek authorities to implement their animal welfare laws. Up to now, they have not been taken seriously. All owned animals were supposed to have been registered and micro chipped by the end of July, but in reality a very small percentage of owners have done so. - The Greek authorities also need to regulate sub-standard shelters scattered around Greece. In a large number of cases these shelters are being run by unqualified individuals, whose concept of animal welfare is non-existent. The dogs would have been better off taking their chances on the streets than be imprisoned in these inhumane cells, where they are doomed to a slow and lingering death. - GAR calls for municipalities to support approved shelters and implement neutering projects, which should involve stray and owned animals. Greece must show - with action rather than words - that it will implement the animal welfare laws and should punish those who are found guilty of causing animal suffering. A VOICE FOR THE ANIMALS WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES WE NEED AS MUCH SUPPORT AS WE CAN GET FOR THIS PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION . ANIMAL SUFFERING KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES, LANGUAGE OR CREED! ANIMALS IN GREECE NEED YOUR HELP! PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT OUR CAUSE AND BRING ALONG A FRIEND . HUMAN OR CANINE (or both!) WE WILL CONGREGATE OPPOSITE THE GREEK EMBASSY ON THURSDAY, 26 AUGUST, AT 12.30pm (NEAREST TUBE: HOLLAND PARK CENTRAL LINE, but it's not impossible to find parking, if arriving by car)
