On finding people

Hi All

I'm new here - and maybe I don't belong. Sent my message off before I spotted

the " UK " bit - and I'm here in Hawaii! I could use some help with respect to

communication in a veganish sort of way. Some background.

 

I've recently retired here to the upper part of the Puna District on Hawaii (Big

Island) to live sustainably on a " small " piece of land (3 acres). The first

items on the list for sustainability are food and energy. Now with respect to

food, I've been a vegetarian since the mid 1960s. Looking at producing food by

my own labor on my own land I've no intention of raising animals (goats for

milk, chickens for eggs is the usual hippie recipe) for food. For one thing I've

avoided eggs for ever so long and eat milk products only as a matter of social

convenience.

 

The land situation is a bit complicated. A land partner and I bought 3

contiguous lots in the Fern Forest subdivision near the town of Volcano Village.

I own one, she another and with respect to the third (jointly owned) we need to

get our money back by bringing in one or more others. I was waiting until I was

more firmly established, especially in gardening, before actively reaching out

for others, but events are pushing me along. For instance, there is now a 3 acre

parcel on the market bordering our parcels and we'd like to have neighborly

neighbors. My land partner, though not a vegetarian, has given her consent for

me to seek vegans for that third parcel she and I jointly own.

 

Why vegan? It looks to me like we're going to have to rebuild our civilization

and it seems to me that even apparently relatively benign uses of animals for

food would be starting down a slippery slope.

 

So much more to say and the devil indeed is in the detail, but enough for now.

Any ideas on how I can find people who would fit into the situation I've

described, admittedly described in a minimal way?
