Guest guest
For those of you attending PROP 2 parties tomorrow, have a great time! I will be with you in spirit! I posted the commentary below on my blogs a couple of days ago, and I welcome you to print and share it, join me on my Web spaces, and direct people to my pages and blogs. The post includes the newly-released argument for PROP 2, with the addition of my two cents. Before reading the newly-released argument for PROP 2, please put the idea of factory farming, which accounts for more than 90% of the human " production " of animals for food, in perspective: Imagine living your entire life confined to the seat of an airplane, along with the hundreds of others of your species in the same airplane. Make no mistake: You would not be permitted to leave your seat to use the toilet; you would have to urinate and deficate in your seat and on yourself, as would those in the seats next to you, and stacked above you and below you; nor would you be allowed to leave your seat to eat or drink; you would be force-fed a mixture of dead humans. When your natural agressive tendancies arose, as can be expected under such severe stress, causing you to lash out at your neighbors, your hands would be cut off without anesthesia, and the resulting infections would not be treated. Your eyes, nose, throat and resperatory tract would burn and become infected from the acids caused by the urine and feces in your enclosed environment, and under minimal artificial light, you would lose your natural pigments. You would, of course, never know touch, affection, companionship or family, as, if you were to have children, which would be the products of rape by machine, they would be taken from you. You would, however, know daily terror as you witnessed others around you being dragged from their seats (unable to walk from pain and bodies ceasing to function), electrocuted, beaten, kicked, prodded and dragged with metal hooks. As you were taken away in the same way, you would be dragged into a place filled with blood, feces and vomit (natural secretions voided by all mamals during moments of pure terror); and then, you would be stunned, your throat cut carelessly and ineptly, hung upside-down (via hooks through your ankles), at which point there would be more than a 50% chance that you would be skinned alive and sawed apart, an ordeal that could leave you conciously suffering for 10-15 minutes. Ah, but this couldn't happen to you because you were lucky enough to be born human. This is equally as rational a thought as that of the luck of the Aryan in Nazi Germany. Speciesism is no less a crime than racism, and factory farms are no less than Aschwitz. Ultimately, therefore, if we are to end such a crime, factory farming must be abolished altogether; however, this modest step, which sadly amounts to one of the largest animal-rights actions in history because of the number of animals it would save, is necessary because of the depth of speciesist thought in which we live. Voting YES on PROP 2 won't hurt you; it will only stop the hurt for someone else of another species. Please vote YES on PROP 2. _____________ The Argument for PROP 2: YES on Proposition 2—Stop Animal Cruelty Proposition 2 is a moderate measure that stops cruel and inhumane treatment of animals — ending the practice of cramming farm animals into cages so small the animals can't even turn around or stretch their limbs. Voting YES on Proposition 2 prevents animal cruelty, promotes food safety, supports family farmers, and protects the environment. The agribusiness interests opposing Proposition 2– masquerading as the deceptively named Californians for Safe Food – have a record of duping the public, harming animals, and polluting the environment. Voting YES on Proposition 2 means: …Preventing cruelty to animals. It’s simply wrong to confine veal calves, breeding pigs, and egg-laying hens in tiny cages barely larger than their bodies. Calves are tethered by the neck and can barely move, pigs in severe confinement bite the metal bars of their crates, and hens get trapped and even impaled in their wire cages. We wouldn’t force our pets to live in filthy, cramped cages for their whole lives, and we shouldn’t force farm animals to endure such misery. All animals, including those raised for food, deserve humane treatment. …Improving our health and food safety. We all witnessed the cruel treatment of sick and crippled cows exposed by a Chino slaughter plant investigation this year, prompting authorities to pull meat off school menus and initiate a nationwide recall. Factory farmers have put our health at risk by allowing these terrible abuses, and now are recklessly telling us it’s okay to keep animals in overcrowded, inhumane conditions. Cramming tens of thousands of animals into tiny cages fosters the spread of animal diseases that may affect people. Proposition 2 is better for animals — and for us. …Supporting family farmers. California family farmers support Proposition 2 because they believe food quality and safety are enhanced by better farming practices. Increasingly, they’re supplying mainstream retailers like Safeway and Burger King. Factory farms cut corners and drive family farmers out of business when they put profits ahead of animal welfare and our health. …Protecting air and water and safeguarding the environment. The American Public Health Association has called for a moratorium on new factory farms because of the devastating effects these operations can have on surrounding communities. Factory farms often spread waste on the ground untreated — contaminating our waterways, lakes, groundwater, soil, and air. By phasing out the worst animal confinement practices, Proposition 2 helps protect our precious natural resources. That’s why California Clean Water Action and Sierra Club-California support Proposition 2. …A reasonable and common-sense reform. Proposition 2 provides ample time — until 2015 — for factory farmers using these severe confinement methods to shift to more humane practices. Arizona , Colorado , Florida , and Oregon have passed similar laws. California veterinarians; family farmers; the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the prestigious Pew Commission on animal agriculture; Republican and Democratic elected officials; leaders of the Episcopal, Methodist, and Catholic churches; the Consumer Federation of America; and others recommend voting YES on Proposition 2.
