That's supposed to help someone be vegan *how*? O_OTry making uncheese recipes. I've seen some using cashews. On Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 1:19 AM, Roxanne <quazievil333 wrote:

I have a *vegetarian*, not vegan, suggestion. Go to a Asian grocery story and get some miso paste. You can get this at a regular grocery store too, but it usually costs so much more. Put a spoon full of it in an omelet. While it's cooking the eggs do something to the miso that makes it taste really cheesy. That's what my sister says any way. I've been allergic to all forms of milk for many years and honestly I really remember what it tastes like, but my sister is in culinary school where she cooks and eats all day so I trust her opinion.

" Arrgghh.  Does anyone have any snappy comebacks to this?  Drove me nuts.

The old vegan cheeses left a lot to be desired. Many new kinds are out there now and they are really, really close to the taste of cheese, but without all the grease floating on top.

There is a Mediterranean feta (vegan) that is wonderful. The brand is Sunergia Soyfoods.

Galaxy Nutritional Foods Veggie Shreds (cheddar and mozzarella) are both good, and melt nicely. They also make sliced "cheese" which is good.

Senora Lupe Quesadilla, Mexican style soft white cheese alternative is really, really good, too. The last two are available at Walmart. The other, at natural foods stores.

Putting miso in an omelet would not be vegan. A vegan would not eat eggs.

Nutritional yeast can make things taste kind of cheesy, but not the same as the above suggestions.

As for the jerks who try to say you need dairy, maybe you should reply with "Oh, I'm going to have some deer milk when I get home." (or dog, kitty, or pig milk, or whatever animal you can think of).

My kids' pediatrician when they were small said there was nothing wrong with drinking a little milk. When I pointed out that it causes so many allergies, diabetes, fat, and, not to mention the fact that humans are the only species on Earth who drink the milk intended for another species' young, I then offered to provide him with some more information. He accepted, and several months later, told me I was right, that it was not good for people.
