MEDIA: Photo Gallery » You won't be able to tell that these chocolate

truffles from Edge of the Woods (379 Whalley Ave., New Haven; 203-787-1055) are

vegan, but they are.

Taste has not been compromised for ethical beliefs — these hand made, golf

ball-sized deep chocolate delights are every bit as smooth, sweet and sinful as

any non-vegan version.

Find them packaged in cute, ribbon-tied bags of three ($4.95) at the bakery

counter in coconut, cocoa and lavender flavors.

I've had a couple successful shopping trips here and am definitely a fan. It

reminds me of the co-ops in San Francisco, which I love. The produce is

definitely fresh, and they have a lot of healthy vegetarian options. For a town

without a Whole Foods nearby, this place is a must! They also have a great

selection of healthy frozen meals from Amy's, and other natural food product

companies, which are hard to come by in this town! Parking is a breeze, too -

bonus!

its good to see non-chain grocery stores around still.. this was my first time

at the edge of the woods, and i'm sure we will be back to the edge of the woods.

its a nice mom and pop type grocery store with lots of interesting vegetarian,

vegan, gluten free, organic, etc stuff .. the supermarket part was well stocked,

had lots of products that i don't see in too many other stores and the staff was

friendly.

the good part was after shopping the store we checked out the bakery section in

the front and the to-go salad bar with prepared foods - the baked goods i tried

were a few vegan cookies and in the grand scheme of cookie awesomeness they were

OK - but as a vegan baked good, they were really quite good and worthwhile. Edge

of the Woods has some breads and other things that looked good - i didn't see

too any gluten free bakery products but we were here late on an off-day so maybe

we just missed it ..

if this place were closer to home i would shop here all the time even though

its a little more expensive for some things.

I shop occasionally at the store, mostly skin and hair care products.

I was surprised with the cashier on the second floor, for a second time this

week. As I was searching for my favorite product- Hanna and asked her to help me

locate one, she was very unfriendly.

And today, I asked her (same cashier again) about some multivitamins for kids (I

did not have my glasses), she responded: " I can not see it from here " , and she

was only a step away, from the shelf. When I brought products to the register to

by, my debit card was declined. I tried with credit card and she responded: " I

don't understand why you keep trying? " , rolling her eyes at me. Well, I had some

cash with me but I was very discouraged from purchasing products at that moment.

I think I will shop on-line from now on.

This is really the only place to shop! It may be slightly more expensive than

shopping at Shaws but it's well worth it! Not only do the have everything you

might want (aside from fish and meat) but they also have an AMAZING bakery and

juice bar. YUM!

The organic and local produce here is decently priced (in moderation) if I can't

go to the New Haven Farmers Market by city hall. Frozen foods are cheaper at

Shaw's. I'm a fan of the juices and smoothies. This is the only place in New

Haven where I can find my craving: strawberry Fage. It's ridiculously

overpriced, but that's the pain I must endure. I like the skincare products

upstairs, but they are also pricey. Expect to have a lighter wallet when you

come, that's all. Cashiers are friendly.

I've had pretty positive experiences here. They have a wide variety of vegan

goods (especially those hard-to-find commodities like vegan sour cream, etc.).

Their produce is pretty tasty. And I absolutely love their spice selection. You

can purchase spices by weight! It's great. No more giant containers of spices

you rarely use. Only what you need, when you need it.

Plus, a friend bought me a vegan chocolate cake from there, and it's heavenly.

Probably one of the best chocolate cakes I've had. It's really dense,

chocolately, and the frosting is delicious. It beats out Claire's cake by quite

a bit. It's wonderful! Now, I really want to go buy one of their carrot cakes.

I went here over the weekend and will definitely be back again every time I

spend a few days hunkered down at my sister's house and need " supplies " . There's

an extensive gluten-free section, and I COMPLETELY appreciate the fact that this

place is 100% vegetarian and I don't have to worry about gross meat

juice/residue dripping on my purchases. Edge Of The Woods is reasonably priced,

too. I didn't try any, but I positively salivated over the vegan and gluten-free

bakery items. They looked so, so delicious. I can't even deal. Next time I'm

just gonna buy a vegan cake and faceplant in it.

Also, they had spaghetti-shaped tofu. Genius!!!

Not bad. Their market is a bit overpriced, but I guess that's to be expected of

a smaller store. They have some items here than can be hard to find elsewhere,

like Tofurkeys (yes...Tofurkeys..I make one for Thanksgiving every year), a

variety of Quorn products, and a decent-sized selection of interesting vegan

products.

Their cafe isn't bad. I had a pretty good sandwich there once. BUT...I had a

vegan cookie at their bakery and it was hard as a rock and tasted like sawdust.

It was just plain awful.

Overall, it's not a bad place. Just avoid the vegan cookies.

Delicious desserts and pricey groceries, that's Edge of the Woods. The prices

are understandable (small-business and health food stores tend to cost more, and

this store is both) but still hard if you're on a budget. I find my favorite

parts of the store to be the seating area where you can enjoy your food, their

salad bar is particularly good as long as the veggies are fresh from that day,

and the upstairs. I'm a sucker for all natural soaps and this is a good place to

get gifts (also try the jewelry stands near the door for your lady friends) for

others or yourself. The vegetarian and vegan options make this store unique.

It's not often you'll find a store like this one.

Nothing special. As a grocery store.

The cheese selection is limited (though cheap, and tasty) and makes no claims to

be rBGH-free. The produce isn't particularly local - New Jersey and Michigan

berries in July!?!

I did find quinoa and those packaged " thai " style noodle soups here. Both items

I couldn't find at Stop and Shop. So that's handy. I loooove the Abraham's brand

hummus. They sell delicious Farm River Honey, which is local - from Branford -

but not organic. And fair trade coffees. And Black and Gold instant cocoa mix.

And Seventh Generation housecleaning products.

In a way, maybe it does function as a " Health Food " store. Perhaps the selection

of packaged and prepared foods includes hard-to-find items for folks with food

allergies or other concerns?

But for fresh, local, tasty groceries, this place doesn't stand out.

Except, I guess, that it's a local business. Coffee is weak but not awful, and

the pumpkin muffins (neither vegan, nor organic, but, rather, made from pumpkin

straight from a big Libby's can!) are pretty good - moist, but not oily, and not

too sweet either. I kinda wish all the coffee shops in New Haven had muffins

this good. And the price is right - coffee and muffin for $2.75 or something.

But the coffee cup is styrofoam!!
