July is National Ice Cream month! Vegans should not feel left out, however,

because vegan ice cream exists. And in a fight, it would completely pummel dairy

ice cream to the ground.

Although I have adopted a vegan lifestyle now, I don't have to stop bragging

that my all-time favorite food is ice cream. It still is, but the best dessert

of all time has been made animal product-free by many people. Vegans: please

don't settle for eating sorbet when all you want is chocolatey-peanut-buttery

goodness! It is out there, and it is delicious!

Also appealing to people who are lactose intolerant or who have dairy allergies,

the dairy-free ice cream business is booming and 'evolving' more than ever

before. Check out Whole Foods' ice cream case if you are wondering what I'm

talking about. There is soy, rice, hemp, coconut-based ice cream, as well as all

the tropical fruit sorbets you could ever want.

My favorite flavors: (So far. Still so many left o try!)

Purely Decadent Cookie Dough (gluten-free!), Turle Trails

Luna and Larry's Coconut Bliss (low-glycemic, soy-free, and only 6 ingredients!)

Soy Dream Butter Pecan, Green Tea

Tofutti Cuties Ice Cream Sandwiches

You can even make your own vegan ice cream! If you have tofu around the house,

or any kind of non-dairy milk, it is not as hard as it sounds. Look at " Even

Vegans Scream for Ice Cream " by Cathe Olson, and Post Punk Kitchen's Vegan soy

ice cream recipe. Also visit A Vegan Ice Cream Paradise.

Vegan toppings:

Vegan whipped cream, tutorial from Everydaydish.com.

Dark chocolate (dairy free) chips

Nuts (coated nuts, like Olomomo's are even more sugary, spicy and delectable)

And kind of nut butter

Dried fruit

Fresh fruit

Agave nectar

among many others... suggestions welcome!

Going out? In Denver, try Sweet Action Ice Cream. Haven't been yet but I've

heard great things!

For more ice cream: Examiner.com's Ice Cream month coverage. Be careful, though.

Many are not vegan, therefore not as tasty and cruelty-free. However, take any

recipe and substitute soy, rice, hemp, almond, coconut milk, etc.

For more on the dairy industry and how unhealthy milk is for you, visit

Notmilk.com and do some research while you're eating your vegan ice cream.
