Guest guest
Golden Era Vegetarian Rachael Daylong Thursday, September 3, 2009 You might be confused when the cover of the menu says " Golden Era Vegetarian " and the second entree listed is " Lemon Chicken. " But don't be fooled: This place is thoroughly vegan. The outside of the restaurant is on the grungy side, but the inside is clean, simply decorated and peacefully isolated from the busy streets of the Tenderloin. The best choices are ones that don't have " chicken " or " beef " in their names. Special No. 12 ($9.95) brings tender stir-fried teriyaki mushrooms and other vegetables, good with a side of rice ($1.50). The dish was surprisingly filling for an omnivore who is used to eating much more meat than mushrooms. The fried wonton appetizer ($4.25) has a filling that tastes good on its own even without the sweet sauce that accompanies it. Also try a mango smoothie ($3.25) from the large selection of drinks. You will be left feeling refreshed and healthier for not drinking something that is usually saturated with dairy. Vitals: 572 O'Farrell St. (at Leavenworth), S.F.
