Straight across from the entrance is a list of 11 breads, six cheeses and 18 "meats," 10 of which are vegetarian. That's what makes this place a destination for herbivores. The inside has room for about four tables along with the sandwich bar. The walls and ceiling are covered by murals that have a true Haight feeling: Most are whimsical paintings of Atlantis, but some are also a little scary, like a hand coming down from the ceiling to grab you, or maybe your sandwich? The vegan "chicken steak" sandwich with everything on it ($5.49) is warm, fresh and gut-busting. Vegan pepper steak ($5.49) on a Dutch crunch roll is satisfying. Although it was not similar to beef in any regard, the "steak" was tender and is well complemented by Dijon mustard. The vegetarian smoked duck ($6.49) is also worth a try, because this faux fowl is not often featured, even on the most vegetarian-friendly menus. It has a sweetness that is very uncharacteristic of real meat. All of these sandwiches can be accompanied by a large ($2.50) or small ($1.25) bag of Kettle brand chips and a cold soda from the large selection along the wall. Vitals: 553 Haight St. (between Fillmore and Steiner streets), S.F. (415) 252-8190. 11:30-2 a.m. Mon.-Sat., 11:30-1 a.m. Sun.
