Comparing Apples and...Other Apples

" Malus the Appyll tree is a tree yt bereth apples and

is a grete tree, " wrote Wynken de Worde, an

Englishman, in the 15th century. " Some beryth sourysh

fruit and harde and some ryght soure and some ryght

swete, with a good savoure and mery. "

We wouldn't put our money on Wynken in a spelling bee,

but he knew his apples. Do you?

Braeburn. A firm, crisp and aromatic apple, with a

blend of tart and sweet flavors - a superb snack

choice.

Cortland. Crisp and full-flavored; excellent for

eating fresh and for baking.

Empire. A fine all-purpose apple, good for eating

fresh, baking in pies and crisps. To freeze for later

use in baked desserts, peel, slice, toss with lemon

juice and pack into freezer bags.

Fuji. Sweet, crisp and juicy, these apples are great

for eating fresh and baking.

Gala. Fresh and flavorful. Just the right size to slip

into a lunch bag or pocket, they make for a great

quick snack.

Golden Delicious. Mild-flavored when eaten fresh;

slices retain their shapes when cooked.

Granny Smith. Tart and crisp; delicious baked or

sautéed.

Jonathan. Rich-flavored; slices hold their shapes when

cooked.

McIntosh. A top choice for applesauce. Though it's too

soft for most pies, some bakers add one or two for the

wonderful aroma they release.

Mutsu. Juicy and sweet; good for baking and freezing.

Northern Spy. Tart and full-flavored; excellent in

baked apple desserts.

Red Delicious. America's most popular snacking apple.

Rome Beauty. A good choice for baking.

Winesap. Spicy, aromatic flavor; good for eating and

baking.
