Guest guest Posted November 11, 2002 Report Share Posted November 11, 2002 Old Time Christmas Cookies 1 cup shortening 1 tsp. salt 2 cups brown sugar (packed) 1 1/2 cups broken pecans 2 eggs 2 cups candied cherries, halved 1/2 cup soured milk, or buttermilk 2 cups cut-up dates (or chopped dates) 3 1/2 cups flour 1 tsp. soda Mix shortening, sugar, and eggs well. Stir in buttermilk. Measure flour by dipping method or by sifting. Blend dry ingredients, stir in. Stir in pecans, cherries and dates. Chill at least 1 hour. Heat oven to 400'(mod ..hot). Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough about 2 " apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Place a pecan half on each cookie, if desired. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, until almost no imprint remains when touched lightly. Makes about 8 doz. cookies.
