Low carbohydrate diets

Low carbohydrate diets result in rapid initial weight

loss, however only as a result of water loss. When you

restrict carbohydrates in the diet, your body used

stored carbohydrates which are stored in the liver and

muscles. This causes a large loss of water, since 3

grams of water are stored with every gram of

carbohydrate. Unfortunately, most dieters are excited

by this rapid initial weight loss (pseudo-weight loss)

and assume it represents a loss in FAT. In reality,

however, body fat stores remain the same! As the body

adjusts for the water deficit, the weight loss slows

or ceases. Complications associated with low

carbohydrate, high protein diets include ketosis ( an

undesirable state), dehydration, electrolyte loss,

calcium depletion, weakness, nausea, dizziness and

possibly even gout! Vitamin and mineral deficiencies

are other problems in such unbalanced " crash-diet "

regimens. Unfortunately, as you have probably guessed

by now, there is NO magic bullet! The keys to

successful weight loss include: a well-balanced,

healthy diet, learning how to " undo " bad habits that

contribute to being overweight and an exercise

program. All these components are found in the eDiets

program.
