Feeding a Holiday Crowd

Maybe you're planning a party, or you're just going to have a house full of

friends and relatives over the holidays. Either way, you've got to feed the

masses. Get menu and snack ideas for full-scale parties and quick meals for a

crowd, not to mention tips and recipes for all your Christmas baking. Also,

learn a little more about Kwanzaa, or get menu

ideas for your own family's celebration.

*** Expecting Guests

Our homes are full of family and friends this time of year. Here are some quick

hints for setting a festive mood and keeping your guests well-fed!

* Set the Mood. It's easy to make the house look, feel and smell festive with

just a little planning. Light cinnamon-scented candles; decorate with fresh pine

boughs; put a pot of spiced cider on the stove to simmer; make cookie dough

ahead of time and freeze it so you can bake up a fresh batch as guests arrive

with no last-minute work.

Build a fire in the fireplace and load up the CD player with holiday tunes.

Yours will be the coziest, jolliest house on the block!

* Stay Sane. Don't go overboard. Your family will love you just as much if you

make two kinds of cookies as if you make five. Having a pared-down selection of

dishes at your party or dinner will help people focus on enjoying each one

instead of being overwhelmed and ill.

If you're serving dinner to a crowd, tell everyone you'll take care of the main

course and assign each adult an appetizer, side dish or dessert. Dividing up the

work means nobody spends all day slaving over a hot stove, and everyone gets to

enjoy the day.

* Feed the Masses. If you're having houseguests, don't try to cook three big

meals a day for them--it will take up all your time, and it can be difficult to

work around everyone's schedules if there are a lot of you.

Plan a few sit-down meals and for the rest, stock the fridge and pantry with

things your guests can help themselves to: bread and bagels for morning toast or

lunchtime sandwiches, lunchmeats, cheeses, condiments, fresh fruit, crackers,

hot and cold cereal, burrito or taco fixings, or ready-made pizza crusts with a

variety of toppings.

Happy Holidays!
