Guest guest
I don't know too much about Indonesia, but a lot of third world countries end up burning down their forest in order to raise the money they owe in interest to western banks. I'm not making excuses for Indonesia, which seems to be a badly corrupted state, but the west should take its responsibilities more seriously, stop washing its hands, and spend its money to safeguard what is left of the world's forests. - paul rance 24 August 1999 22:27 Indonesian fires Hello Gang, So, the fires have started again. Funny how the Indonesian Government turns a blind eye to the destruction of their country, environmentally, yet commits genocide to make sure East Timor remains under its control. The West has given Indonesia a lot of cash to help it economically, despite the fact that it seems unwilling to save its own surroundings. Should the West stop sending them economic support? - Paul. Guest guest
Good points, Andy baby, But the West only really sees the £$ signs. The loggers are killing orang-utans and selling their skins as well. If the West and Indonesian Government saw some financial interest in stopping these sort of things, then, of course, something would be done. Hundreds of thousands of years of evolution hasn't really changed the human psyche. Me first. Hopefully, the next century will bring about a change re the perception of our planet, though that may only come because people feel threatened by environmental changes. P.
