Hunting + Greyhound appeals

Stop Junior Hunting Days in Connecticut

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) annual Junior Hunting Days a hunting event for children ages 12 to 15. It took place in Bridgeport, Conn., on Saturday, Oct. 23, and will be held again in Bozrah, Conn. next month. The hunt takes place on state property and involves shooting farm-raised pheasants.

Please write a letter to the DEP and let them know that the Junior Hunting Day program is irresponsible and inhumane to animals. At a time when our nation is plagued with school violence, desensitizing children to killing is destructive and puts their safety at risk. It is also cruel to raise non-native pheasants in pens and then release the defenseless birds for target practice. This hunt should be stopped immediately and replaced with an event that teaches respect for life.

Please send your letters to:

Please send a copy of your letter to Pete Bogue, assistant director of the Wildlife Division, who is quoted in the article as saying that the course is supposed to "control access to firearms, and limit their ownership and use to those who handle them responsibly." His postal and e-mail addresses are the same as above, and he can also be reached by phone at 860-424-3492.

Urge Coke to End Greyhound Race Sponsorship

According to The American Greyhound Track Operators Association (AGTOA), Coca-Cola recently sponsored the National Greyhound Night of Stars, an affair billed as "a charity event to benefit greyhound adoption" and "give fans across the country the opportunity to watch and wager on the nation's top racers."

In reality, the event turned out to be nothing more than corporate welfare for an industry built on the suffering and exploitation of greyhounds who are routinely disposed of when their racing days are over. According to AGTOA representative Stan Flint, "Regrettably, the expenses associated with the first-ever event were higher than anticipated, and resulted in a budget deficit. No proceeds were available for distribution." In other words, no money was raised for greyhound adoptions.

When confronted by greyhound advocates, Coca-Cola decided to play the blame game by stating that the event was sponsored not by the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, but by independent distributors. However, the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta has the final say as to how its trademark is used and can end its association (distributors or otherwise) with the greyhound industry if it so chooses.

There is also this World Wildlife Fund survey on Fisheries. I think they are going to use the results (asks whether you prefer eco-friendly tuna etc.) to convince authorities to start using eco-friendly tactics such as not overfishing etc. I thought it was worthwhile. More info can be found at this site.

Sorry to inundate you with so many appeals, I've just been to busy lately to deal with them as they come.
